'We shook hands': Rugby league boss accuses Premier of making excuses on stadium backflip

Rugby league boss Peter V’landys accused the New South Wales prime minister of using a “humanitarian tragedy” to renege on a handshake agreement to transform a suburban stadium. Key points: NSW Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet says he should prioritize disaster funding over stadium grants However, rugby league boss Peter V’landys accused Perrottet of making excuses to cancel their deal. Mr V’landys claims the deal includes hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade stadiums in Manly, Cronulla and Leichhardt V’landys threatened to move the NRL Grand Finals from Sydney as a result, saying the sport had been “tied up” by the state government for three years. He said Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet this year pledged to upgrade local pitches across the city as part of a deal to keep the game showpiece in Harbor City until 2042. “We shook hands. We looked into each other’s eyes and we made a deal,” V’landys told Nine radio this morning. “He said, ‘You don’t have to put it in the budget, I c

Earth's primordial water cycle was key to making continents, study shows

Credit: Curtin University A new study from Curtin University has found that water was transported much deeper in the early Earth than previously thought, explaining how the continents originally formed. Studies published in Earth and Planetary Science Letter answers a long-standing question about Earth’s early water cycle. Principal investigator Dr. Michael Hartnady, of the Curtin School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, says how water is stored and transported through the Earth’s crust affects everything from where volcanoes and mineral deposits form to where earthquakes occur. “Although we understand the modern deep water cycle, we know very little about how it worked when Earth was a very young planet,” said Dr. Hartnady. “Some geological evidence suggests that water was transported to great depths on Earth all the way back to 3.5 billion years ago, although it is not well understood how exactly it got there.” The researchers used ad

Making a Quantum Hall Interferometer Based on Marginally Rotated Graphene

Image
The Quantum Hall Effect (QH) enables the exploitation of the quantum coherence of electrons for a wide range of applications from metrology to quantum computing. QH interferometry is a handy tool that provides an archetypal platform for achieving interwoven statistics of fractional QH states. However, the phase coherence along the interferometer and the suppression of the Coulomb filling energy are required to observe the fractional statistics. Study: Quantum Hall interferometry in the triangular domain of a marginally twisted bilayer graphene. Image Credit: Neon_dust/Shutterstock.com In an article recently published in the journal nano letter, The QH interferometer is based on a slightly twisted bilayer graphene with a twist angle (θ) of 0.16 degrees. Operation of the device in the QH regime results in unique magneto-thermopower features, including Aharonov–Bohm (AhB) and Fabry–Pérot (FP) oscillations in the magnetic-density field phase, where the Landau level fill factor (ν) is 4
