Mom slammed for making daughter, 18, sign $100 per month rent to stay at home

A mother who had her 18-year-old daughter sign a $100-a-month rent to continue living at home has sparked a heated debate on TikTok after opening up about her new financial arrangement with the teenager.

An Oklahoma mother filmed her daughter Jada, 18, signing a legal lease agreement and posted it with the caption ‘when your 18 year old decides to stay home’.

The video of the unnamed woman was later cut to her daughter signing a legal agreement with the text ‘arrangement. [her] for success.’

Her clip sparked a firestorm on the video-sharing app, garnering more than 1.5 million views, as well as thousands of likes and comments – with many users divided over whether the mother treated her daughter fairly.

After receiving numerous ‘hate comments’ Jada’s mother took to TikTok to post a response video in which she attempted to explain to her over 24,000 followers why she got her daughter to sign the contract.

“I was a single mother at 16 and my parents didn’t set me up for success, I had to fight for everything I had,” the Oklahoma woman says at the beginning of her video.

She went on to add that she doesn’t want her children to be ‘dependent’ on her for ‘anything’ and everything she does is ‘preparing’ her children for the ‘real world’.

The mother-of-six adds that in the Oklahoma area they are from, tenants must have proof of a ‘tenant history’ when they prepare to rent or buy a home, adding that she makes a valid lease agreement for her daughter to have a tenant history.

And while social media users were quick to advise the mother to let her daughter save $100 for other expenses, the Oklahoma woman said: ‘That’s the only bill [Jada] pay, no car payments, no insurance, no cell phone bills.’

He adds that the $100 that Jada pays to her mother each month goes towards ‘utilities, rooms, food and everything else.’

As the hate comments don’t end, Jada took to TikTok to record a video of her own response and said that her mother ‘got [her] ready’ for the future

The 18-year-old also noted that she would have to pay rent ‘sooner or later’ once she ‘moved out’.

The mother-of-six added that she had made each child sign a contract if they stayed at home which sparked more hate comments and Jada asked users not to ‘judgment’ her mother.

The mother, who got all her other children to sign contracts, stressed that she was ‘preparing her daughter for success’ and while Jada had the ‘right to move, in this economy it would be much more difficult if she did. ‘

While many users were concerned about what Jada would think of a legitimate rental agreement, the mother-of-six was quick to reassure them that her daughter ‘agreed to everything but her curfew, and we negotiated it and she got what she wanted.’

To stop the hate comments, the Oklahoma woman even had her daughter Jada shoot a video discussing the lease agreement.

At the start of the clip, Jada notes that the idea of ​​singing rent to live in a house was “difficult for her to grasp,” but says she quickly came up with the idea because she had to pay rent once she moved “sooner or later.”
