Cybersecurity professor shares tips on how to protect yourself from hackers

Image
Paul Haskell-Dowland has been in the cybersecurity research and education domain for two decades — and it’s his mission to teach us all how to stay safe online. This is important work for the Edith Cowan University Professor of Cybersecurity Practice. The cost of cybercrime in Australia is very high, although the figures are likely to be even greater than the reported data suggest. Cybercriminals operate in a highly sophisticated environment. ( Provided: Paul Haskell-Dowland ) “Estimated [a couple of years ago] that the global cost of cybercrime … will reach the $1 trillion mark, and I believe it has passed that,” he said. “It’s very difficult to get an accurate indication of these numbers, because so much cybercrime goes unreported.” Professor Haskell-Dowland, who is also Associate Dean for Computing and Security, said for many people their only insight into the world of cybercrime is what is portrayed in the media in films like Hacker, and ev...

Want to feel happier? Paul Bloom has some tips on what to avoid, and it's not what you think

Image
Psychologist Paul Bloom can’t be the only person in the world who wonders why sane people choose to practice marathons. Why volunteer for cramps, dehydration, and bleeding toes? While we’re at it, why choose to watch a scary movie or take on a big project that you know will stress you out? “Chosen suffering” is a complicated human flea, Professor Bloom tells ABC RN’s Big Idea. In this “hedonistic era,” we all want to have fun, he says. “But that’s not all we want.” For centuries, religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and the philosophers of the Enlightenment, have debated the value of suffering. Professor Bloom argues that suffering can give us things we may not know we need – and even lead to satisfaction. Why would anyone choose to hurt themselves because of a marathon workout? Start time for trial stage 20 of the Tour de France - Cycling Tips

Image
The final test of the Tour de France 2022 has arrived. Forty kilometers against time, only humans and machines. They call it the truth race for a reason. Phase 20 of the time trial begins at Lacapele-Marival and ends at Rocamadour. It was an exciting and exhausting final time trial to decide on the yellow jersey once and for all before the arrival of the race in Paris. The 40km length is the length we’ve seen in Tour races against time in recent years and means we could see a big gap forming. A bad day can result in more than a minute lost. Most of the track is pretty flat before the two minor climbs in the last 5km, just to increase the pressure if the GC is still close. The Côte de Mags was the first, 1.6 km at 4.7%, before the final climb to the finish line. The Côte de l’Hospitalet is 1.5 km long with an average slope of 7.8%. With a Netflix camera in tow, ASO has designed this one for potential fireworks. Fingers crossed. Profile of the 20th stage of the Tour de...

Top ten tips for surviving the chaos of today's travels

Image
There is chaos out there for travelers, but there are ways you can prepare. Photo: Jason South An hour and a half. That’s how long it took me to leave Sydney Airport a few weeks ago. One and a half hour. Ninety minutes. To go. Not to check in and go through security and board the plane. Just to grab my bag and jump in the car and leave. It was raining, so my plan to escape with my kids from the back row of the plane straight out the back door was thwarted. We were the last to get off. Then we had to wait for our baggage (which, in Virgin Australia’s judgment, finally turned up). And then we step outside to the mother of all traffic jams, absolute traffic jams, which doesn’t move a centimeter for good. Nightmare. Happy traveling in the post-middle era of this pandemic. It’s wild out there. Difficult. Airlines are struggling, going through a mix of bad luck and bad decisions. Airports are crazy. Luggage is missing. Flight is being cancel...
