How Neurons Build and Maintain Their Capacity to Communicate - Neuroscience News

Image
Summary: Researchers reveal how neurons organize and maintain the vital infrastructure that enables seamless nerve transmission. Source: Picower Institute of Learning and Memory The nervous system works because neurons communicate through connections called synapses. They “talk” as calcium ions flow through channels into the “active zone” which is laden with vesicles carrying molecular messages. The electrically charged calcium causes the vesicles to “fuse” to the outer membrane of the presynaptic neuron, releasing its communicative chemical charge to the postsynaptic cell. In a new study, scientists at The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT provide some revelations about how neurons organize and maintain this vital infrastructure. “Calcium channels are a major determinant of calcium influx, which then triggers vesicle fusion, so they are important components of the machinery on the presynaptic side that converts electrical signals into chemical synaptic transmissions,”

Cost to build a house up $94k since 2021 as it sends construction companies down

Costs to build homes have risen by more than $94,000 in the past 15 months amid warnings half of Australian construction firms could be forced to close. The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed in its latest building approvals data that the median price for building a new home was $413,436 in May. This marks a $94,177 increase in the cost to build a new home more than a year ago when prices averaged just $319,259 in February 2021. Homeowners typically sign a fixed price contract with their building company the day the project starts – which protects the signer but can sometimes leave the trade in trouble. Soaring material costs, the Covid pandemic, rising inflation and war in Ukraine have fueled global supply shortages and forced prices to skyrocket, sending many companies into chaos. Paul Viney, president of the Victorian Association of Consulting Architects, said builders had raised prices to protect themselves. ‘Builders are afraid of making losses [so] they build significant co

Quinbrook to build 2000MWh battery at Supernode data storage site in Queensland

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has revealed plans to build Australia’s largest battery storage installation – 2000MWh – to support a large data storage center close to Brisbane in southeast Queensland. The 800MW/2000MWh “Supernode” battery project proposes to support data centers, provide service that can be delivered to the grid, strengthen additional renewable energy capacity, and act as a “stop” to reduce the risk of blackouts in Queensland. The project is separate from the Lockyer 1,000MWh battery storage project Quinbrook is also seeking to build in Queensland, as part of plans to convert peak gas generation plans to battery storage. This project is one of a number of large-scale battery storage projects currently being proposed across Australia, and would be the largest if proceeded now, although it could also be terminated by competing projects. Quinbrook said the project site, adjacent to the South Pine substation in Brendale, offers unmatched power supply access and redu
