Two experts decipher the first images of the James Webb Space Telescope, and explain what we've learned

Today we take a look at the release of the first batch of images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. This is something we have both been waiting for for almost 25 years. Back in those days, we analyzed the first Hubble images of the distant universe, and the details they reveal are staggering compared to anything we’ve seen in ground-based images. It seems the bar has been raised once again, and Webb is set to herald a new era for astronomy and space research. Its large mirror helps it produce images that are two to three times sharper than Hubble’s, and that go much deeper into space (which means it can see dimmer sources). Webb was also able to see far redder infrared wavelengths, opening up new views of the universe. This is particularly important for studying the early universe because of “cosmological redshift,” a process that refers to the stretching of light (with the expansion of the universe) as it travels through cosmic space. It’s also useful for studying interes

“I have a story. I have lived through conjecture [gang] war. I am here to tell my side of the story,” said Huncho recently Spectrum . The West Sydney crew of OneFour had trailed for a local practice but found themselves crippled by police intervention when it came to performing their music. In 2019, three members of the group, YP (Pio Misa), Lekks (Salec Sua) and Celly14 (Dahcell Ramos) are jailed after being found guilty of recklessly causing severe bodily injury after a fight at a Rooty Hill pub. There is no suggestion that other OneFour members are involved in any criminal activity. Merrylands rapper Ay Huncho has attracted fans for his uncompromising songs. According to OneFour’s manager Ricky Simandjuntak, police have used a number of tactics in the past to influence the group’s ability to tour. “Normally, when it comes to shows, they don’t shut us down directly, so they pressure the venue, threaten to investigate past differences, and pressure venues and agents not to do busi

Thematic ETFs that still excite experts

Specialists show funds with interesting long-term themes Apart from volatility and construction issues, several ETFs still attract attention After enjoying strong returns and inflows early in the pandemic, thematic ETFs have come down to earth with force. Demand for the product has declined, with flows to thematic ETFs across Europe totaling €0.6 billion (£0.5 billion) in the first quarter of 2022, the first quarter since 2019 in which they attracted less than €1 billion. That reflects some terrible performance: to quote some of the hardest hit, the VanEck Crypto and Blockchain Innovator UCITS ETF (DAGB) recorded a brutal paper loss of around 74 percent in the first half of 2022, while DLL Group UCITS Blockchain Equity and Digital Assets ETF (KOIP) before down 67.7 percent over the same period. As our chart below shows, a large number of other funds have incurred losses of at least 30 percent during that time – out of a sample of around 50 thematic ETFs, only five have ended thi

Why the market is more reliable than the 'experts'

After the worst start to the year in decades, global bond markets have convinced themselves that they face a double threat; one from inflation destroys real yields, and the second from the Federal Reserve and other central banks to deliberately engineer sharp interest rate hikes so that they create a recession, and credit markets are even worse than sovereign debt. Data that supports this view is highlighted, while data that does not support is mostly ignored. Recession warning But then in the middle of last month, long US bonds started to rally from yields near 3.5 percent and the narrative began to shift from stagflation – inflation and poor economic growth – towards an outright recession. Forget that this might just be a value based asset allocation decision, or anything to do with rebalancing quantity funds, it’s taken as proof of new economic forecasts. The Euro-dollar market is now saying that the Fed is not going to raise interest rates more and commodity prices are falling sha

Experts urge vigilance in rushing to define the long term COVID

While the old COVID-19, also known as the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), is a rapidly emerging health crisis across the US and abroad, there is no practical medical definition for it — and it may not be the case. the bad ones, say experts. There are overarching definitions for long-term COVID, such as that from the CDC, which states that long-term COVID-19 is first identifiable “at least four weeks after infection,” and WHO, which says that it occurs “usually within three months of the onset of COVID-19, with symptoms and effects that last for at least two months.” The medical community has taken a more clinical swing in defining the term COVID in an effort to improve patient care. The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has listed 50 different symptoms that may be associated with prolonged COVID-19. Scrolling through patient-driven forums, such as a Reddit channel called r/covidlonghaulers, reveals a wider list of symptoms. However, researchers and do
