Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes, and about two thirds of cardiovascular deaths occur in people with diabetes or prediabetes in Australia. People living with diabetes are up to four times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, often considered to be at the same risk as someone who has previously had a heart attack or stroke. The risk of CVD is higher in people with a longer history of diabetes, microvascular complications and poor glycemic control.
