Want to feel happier? Paul Bloom has some tips on what to avoid, and it's not what you think

Psychologist Paul Bloom can’t be the only person in the world who wonders why sane people choose to practice marathons. Why volunteer for cramps, dehydration, and bleeding toes? While we’re at it, why choose to watch a scary movie or take on a big project that you know will stress you out? “Chosen suffering” is a complicated human flea, Professor Bloom tells ABC RN’s Big Idea. In this “hedonistic era,” we all want to have fun, he says. “But that’s not all we want.” For centuries, religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and the philosophers of the Enlightenment, have debated the value of suffering. Professor Bloom argues that suffering can give us things we may not know we need – and even lead to satisfaction. Why would anyone choose to hurt themselves because of a marathon workout? Qantas rearranges London flights to avoid Heathrow's hats and chaos

Qantas was forced to reschedule two flights from London’s Heathrow Airport this week, following the airport’s decision to impose a limit of 100,000 passengers per day in hopes of easing congestion amid extended delays. The London-Singapore-Sydney QF2 service will now depart nine hours earlier than usual – at 12pm, and from Heathrow’s Terminal 4 instead of the usual Terminal 3 – in a bid to avoid rush hour crowds. However, this will leave hundreds of passengers on the Airbus A380 superjumbo facing an 11-hour stopover in Singapore – with Qantas saying it will provide accommodation for passengers – before flights continue to Sydney on their regular schedule. The airline said it was contacting all passengers booked on Tuesday’s QF2 flight to warn them of the change. “Like all airlines, we are disappointed by the decision made by Heathrow Airport to suddenly reduce passenger capacity and we are doing everything we can to minimize this impact on our customers,” a Qantas spokesperson said. Why the US can avoid a 'real' recession

Nearly 70 percent of economists surveyed believe NBER will make this call at some point next year, according to a University of Chicago survey. US gross domestic product fell 0.35 percent in the first quarter, slowing annual growth to 3.6 percent. Interestingly, part of the blow was through the trade balance where imports of services exploded to a record $US51.6 billion ($76.6 billion). Half of that comes from the cost of using intellectual property due to a temporary boost from the costs of rights to broadcast the Winter Olympics. The second quarter GDP data will be released on July 28, and that could touch and head for a technical recession. But that doesn’t mean the country will be in an NBER-defined recession. Morgan Stanley US economist Julian Richers thinks there may be a technical recession but not a recession, as defined by the NBER. Under pressure: Fed Chair Jerome Powell is trying to avoid a 1970s-style price spiral. Bloomberg “The latest trade data this week has moved ou

How to avoid breast pain while running

The question of how to avoid breast pain while running is a common one. While many of us love the physical and mental health benefits that come with running, the breast pain that comes with it is something we can all live without. Breast pain (also called mastalgia) while running isn’t all that surprising when you consider how much — and in how much direction — they move during exercise. “Breast pain while running is linked to breast displacement, so it’s not just an up-and-down movement, but also side-to-side and back-to-back motion,” says Michelle Norris, senior research fellow in the department of exercise and exercise science at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. In fact, the University’s Research Group in Breast Health found that the breasts can move an average of 10cm in three different directions during a run. That’s where the best sports bras for running are (opens in a new tab) can help, especially as a study conducted by the University of Portsmouth (opens in a new

What are jogger nipples and how to avoid them?

What are runner’s nipples? This may sound like the start of a cheesy joke, but it’s actually a painful condition caused by blisters on one or both nipples. It can occur in both men and women during exercise, usually in long-distance running where there is prolonged friction between the nipple and clothing. For women, choosing the best sports bra for running (opens in a new tab) can help, while there are other tricks you can try to avoid them – which we will reveal more about in this article. What are runner’s nipples? “Runner’s nipples are blisters that occur when the nipple or nipple rubs repeatedly against a bra or clothing,” says sports physiotherapist and triathlete Claire Fitzpatrick of Fitz & Physio. Some nipples are more sensitive and therefore more prone to it. Runner’s nipples can occur all year round. In w
