We found some strange radio sources in distant galaxy clusters. They make us rethink what we think we know.

Image
The universe is filled with galaxy clusters – massive structures piled up at the intersection of the cosmic web. A single cluster can span millions of light years and consist of hundreds, or even thousands, of galaxies. However, these galaxies represent only a few percent of the total mass of the cluster. About 80% of it is dark matter, and the rest is hot plasma “soup”: gas heated to above 10,000,000℃ and entwined with weak magnetic fields. We and our team of international colleagues have identified a series of rarely observed radio objects – radio remains, radio halos, and radio emission fossils – in a highly dynamic galaxy cluster called Abell 3266. They challenge existing theories about the object’s origin. and their characteristics. Relics, halos and fossils Clusters of galaxies allow us to study a rich variety of processes – including magnetism and plasma physics – in environments that we cannot recreate in our laboratories. When the clusters collide with each other, a large a

Mom is confused by strange object found in rental property

Mom is baffled by a strange object found on her rental property – so do YOU know what it is? A woman seeks advice online after finding a strange object on her rental property Ruth shared a picture of two house-shaped objects stuck to the wall At first, many thought the product was a broom, mop, or dog tin holder But others say the unusual item is a keychain missing some parts By Carina Static For Australian Daily Mail Published: 01:53 EDT, 31 July 2022 | Updated: 03:52 EDT, 31 July 2022 A woman was left scratching her head after finding two house-shaped objects stuck to the wall in her new rent. Seeking advice Ruth shared a series of pictures to a popular Australian Facebook group – but others were just as confused. ‘I just moved into a new house. The previous owners were VERY organized (much more so than me!) They had a place and systems and corners for everything,’ he wrote. ‘We can’t figure out what some of the t

Cosmic tango: this extremely strange planet's orbit points to a violent and chaotic past

Image
If you close your eyes and imagine a planetary system orbiting a distant star, what do you see? For most people, such thinking gives rise to systems that mirror the Solar System: planets orbiting their parent stars in nearly circular orbits – rocky planets are closer together, and giants like Jupiter in the icy depths. However, the more we study the cosmos, the more we begin to realize that planetary systems like ours may be more the exception than the rule. Imagine a system with a single gas planet, slightly larger than Saturn, tracing the surface of its parent star in a very fast orbit. It is extremely hot and glows a dull red, baked in stellar radiation. Then imagine another, more distant giant planet, larger than Jupiter, moving on a distant and highly elongated orbit that makes it look more like a comet than a traditional planet. It doesn’t sound like home, does it? But that’s what we found. Introducing planetary system HD83443 The story of the HD83443 system begins in the late

Strange storyline Producer Neighbors used to hide Alan Fletcher's alopecia diagnosis

Weird storyline that Neighbors producers used on soap to hide veteran star Alan Fletcher’s diagnosis of alopecia after he started going bald By Mary Mrad For The Australian Daily Mail Published: 10:52 p.m. EDT, 14 July 2022 | Updated: 04:17 p.m. EDT, 15 July 2022 Veteran Neighbors star Alan Fletcher has revealed how producers tried to hide his alopecia diagnosis while filming the Channel Ten show. The 65-year-old actor said he tried to hide his diagnosis – an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss – by claiming his character Dr Karl Kennedy had dodgy hair products failed. ‘It’s starting to get a little weird. Karl wears a hat all the time, so I go to the producers and literally say, “I need to have a little bit of a scene, just something wedged that explains what’s going on”,’ Alan explained. Alan Fletcher, 65, his neighbour, revealed that he tried to hide his alopecia diagnosis on the show with a storyline a

There was a strange row of lights in the sky before dawn on Friday

The eerie light juxtaposition in the east coast night sky on Friday morning was actually the 46 satellites that launched into space on Monday. They belong to Elon Musk’s SpaceX company and, if you want to catch them before they’re out of sight, you’ve got to be quick. Here’s how to recognize it. Watch the video above to see the SpaceX satellite formation launch that scares stargazers Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >> The juxtaposition of traveling satellites moves through space like strings of pearls, creating quite an interesting spectacle for stargazers. While they may appear to be stars, or even UFOs, they are actually Musk’s company-owned Starlink satellite convoy that launched Monday in California. If you want a glimpse, Australian National University astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker told 7NEWS.com.au Aussies on the east coast only have until Friday morning to see this particular alignment. It’s been a big week for space fanatic
