This time of year has often seen distributors clearing cupboards, getting ready for a big summer release, but COVID-19 and new release platforms have scrambled the eggs. There are one or two big movies this month, like Bullet Train – Brad Pitt’s action comedy – but much more that is quirky and eccentric. David Cronenberg and Jordan Peele are both back in the ring, so anything can happen. Let the August winds guide you. Or just read. Athletes to watch at Commonwealth Games

2) Rohan Browning (athletics) The ‘flying mullet’ will be back in business for the 100m blue ribbon event on the track, as well as the 4x100m relay. Browning recorded a best time of 10.01 seconds in the warm-up at the Tokyo Olympics but recorded a disappointing 10.22 seconds at the recent World Championships in Athletics. It’s a hot court at 100m, with Olympic bronze medalist Andre De Grasse as favourite, ahead of reigning Commonwealth Games champion Akani Simbine of South Africa. Browning is a reasonable chance of reaching the final and is desperate to become the second Australian — after Patrick Johnson — to break the magical 10-second barrier. 3) Alyssa Healy (cricket) Women’s T20 cricket is being contested for the first time at the Commonwealth Games and Australia has a great chance of winning gold after consistent success over the last few years. Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, and Ash Gardner will wear gold, but the fittest player is arguably Alyssa Healy. Alyssa Healy celebrated he

How to Watch NOAA's 'Voyage to the Ridge' Deep Sea Expedition in Real Time

Image
An expedition to map and survey a poorly understood region of the Atlantic Ocean is underway this week. Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and a partner group sent a two-part, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) on a series of deep-sea dives as part of a mission called “Voyage to the Ridge 2022.” The ROV carries sensors and cameras, and records everything it finds on the ocean floor along parts of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge — one of the largest geological features on Earth. The best part: you can follow along, watching discoveries happen in real-time via a series of live streams on the NOAA website. The footage so far, of the first of many planned dives, has been astounding, and more to come. Yesterday’s dive reached the seabed at around 9pm AEST and just finished at 4am this morning (July 21). If all goes well, the current overall expedition will continue through July 29, with daily online dive streaming from approximately 8:45 p.m. to 7 a.m. AEST. Then,

Cancel your plans! There are so many great TV shows and movies this month that you’ll want to be at home for the rest of the time. Here are our top picks for July viewing. Persuasion (Netflix, July 15) Load I have six words for you: Dakota Johnson uses a British accent. Wait, I need more than that: Dakota Johnson does a British accent and occasionally breaks the fourth wall in the Persuasion adaptation (17 words). You can see why stan Jane Austen loves this film. People have debated it hotly before its release. Load But let’s forget all that and talk premise, because it’s still an interesting classic: Anne Elliott (Johnson) must decide between the escapees, Captain Frederick Wentworth (played by Cosmo Jarvis), and Mr William Elliott (Henry Golding!!! !) It gives both desire and confusion, but most importantly it provides DRAMA of various periods, which is always good. If by slim coincidence none of those things speak to you, this is one to watch for the simple fact that it will proba
