Rugby News: Wallaby prop replaced for Argentina Test, Eddie's dream job revealed, challenge call on TRC red card

England rugby union coach Eddie Jones says his dream job is coaching the South Sydney Rabbitohs but admits he has little chance of landing a show in the NRL. Jones remained in Australia after leading the tourists to a 2-1 draw over the Wallabies, spending time at Melbourne Storm, Melbourne AFL club and Penrith Panthers, where he discussed his interest in the league. “I love this game,” Jones said during his visit to Penrith. “If the opportunity was there (in the NRL) I would, but the reality is it probably won’t be there.” Asked about Rabbitoh, Jones replied: “It would be a dream team. It would be a dream. “Since the age of five, I have supported Souths. It would be great (to train the Rabbitoh).” If he was offered the job, he would take a “100 percent, yes.” The incumbent coach is Jason Demetriou. Jones has been linked with a potential return to Australian rugby after next year’s World Cup, when his contract expires with England. He has been busy...

Sorrow and triumph: How the young opener faced his toughest test

Image
Few cricketers have had more difficult first-class debuts than Ryan Hackney. Neglected to duck a 12-ball in the first half, the young NSW opener only better scored by one run in the second. But that return wasn’t what made that week in February so difficult. After banging on the Blues’ door of selection over the previous four seasons with 3,600 Premier Cricket and a NSW Second XI running nearly 40, places have finally opened due to a finger injury to captain Kurtis Patterson. Hackney exits Gabba after being knocked out in Sheffield Shield first round // Getty So the boy from the Blue Mountains should have enjoyed the greatest achievement of his sports career. But a week before the game against Queensland at Gabba, where he received his No.758 Baggy Blue hat, Hackney received news the 22-year-old shouldn’t have heard. His father, Peter, suffered a heart attack and died suddenly at the age of 53. For Hackney, the decision to play was a simple one. “I know that...

Syphilis on the rise: dial up screening and "test it away" - InSight+

BETWEEN COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory viruses, doctors must now keep tabs on their patients at risk as the number of syphilis continues to rise in vulnerable communities, leading to calls for increased screening in those groups. According to National Infectious Disease Surveillance Report From 30 May to 12 June 2022, there was a “continuous epidemic” occurring in men who have sex with men (MSM), mainly aged 20–39 years, in urban areas, in women aged 20–39 years (both Aboriginal and Population). Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous) in urban areas, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in northern and central Australia. “This is a very significant increase. Syphilis is a serious infection and we need to take it very seriously,” said Professor Christopher Fairley, Director of the Melbourne Center for Sexual Health and Professor of Public Health at Monash University. Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum . There ...

'Rugby is out of control,' says Jones, as England regain control of Wallabi in Brisbane

Image
England coach Eddie Jones said rugby’s use of red and yellow cards was “out of control” and the referee would be the most important player when the top teams meet at next year’s World Cup. Key points: Eddie Jones and Dave Rennie were both displeased with the rules mandating a yellow card for an accidental knock-on while trying to intercept Jones says Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell combination is “well developed” Rennie says the Wallabies’ depth will be tested, especially in the locks, as the injury list increases Speaking after his England side recorded a 25-17 win over the Wallabies at Lang Park on Saturday, Jones criticized the number of cards issued in the game, including for deliberate and controversial knock-ons. “I think the game has gotten out of hand,” he said. “We saw in the New Zealand-Ireland Test, at one stage the commentators couldn’t count how many players were on the pitch. Serious. They have three backs that pa...

The Wallabies face a deep test as they attempt to secure a draw win over England

Image
The Wallabies find themselves in almost unfamiliar territory, with a chance to secure the newly minted Ella-Mobbs Trophy in the second Test against England in Brisbane this evening. As far as this mid-year three-Test series goes, only four of them go back to 2014. The 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cup years meant no Tests were played in June in those years. We just went straight from Super Rugby to the shortened Rugby Championship. And of the four series, only the 2016 series against England where the Wallabies have not won the first Test. Against France in 2014, the Wallabies won in Brisbane and finished the draw in Melbourne, before completing a clean sweep of the draw in Sydney. And against France again last year, the Wallabies won again in Brisbane but dropped a second Test in Melbourne. A Noah Lolesio penalty scored the tie again in Brisbane. Fourth draw against Ireland in 2018, where again the Wallabies won the first Test in Brisbane, but then lost the draw following defeats in Mel...

Dalton Papalii appointed on the blindside flanker as All Blacks reshuffle package for Ireland test

Scott Barrett has switched to locks after a concussion ruled Sam Whitelock out of the second test against Ireland in Dunedin on Saturday night. All Blacks coach Ian Foster, who revealed his team on Thursday, has been forced to toy with his attacking squad as 133 testing veteran Whitelock has kept him out of action due to symptoms of a pending concussion. Patrick Smith/Getty Images Dalton Papalii, pictured in action against the United States last year, has been named to start on the flanks for the All Blacks against Ireland in Dunedin on Saturday night. Another key, Tupou Vaa’i, was also not considered for selection after contracting Covid-19. The absences of Whitelock and Vaa’i have resulted in Patrick Tuipulotu and Josh Dickson joining the squad earlier this week. Tuipulotu, who was originally ineligible for the Irish series due to missing Super Rugby Pacific to play in Japan, has been added to the bench. The NZ Rugby Board approved a dispensation to allow ...

Entertainers, rockstars and riff dudes at Test cricket and frenzy ensues

The night before the Fifth Trial between England and India in Edgbaston, Ben Stokes watched “Elvis,” a biographical drama about rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley. You wouldn’t describe Stokes or his team-mates as cinephiles, although they often make the trip to the movies on Test game week to pass the time. Choosing a film is usually fairly easy, although Stokes’ penchant for horror films can be polarizing. On odd occasions they have taken inspiration from the big screen. During their 2019-20 South Africa tour, they were fascinated by Sam Mendes’ “1917”, about the search for two British soldiers who delivered the message to call off a failed operation. It helped Mendes, a cricket fan, name the three characters after Stokes, Jos Buttler and Alastair Cook. This time around, there aren’t too many cricket references – even if director Baz Luhrmann is Australian – but there are certain moments that touch Stokes’ ...
