Stephen King to testify against own publishers in merger trial

Image
As the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) works to convince a federal judge that the merger of Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster will damage the careers of some of the world’s most popular writers, it rests in part on the testimony of a writer who has thrived like several others—Stephen King. Key points: DOJ sues to block merger between Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster in major test of Biden administration’s antitrust policies Their star witness, bestselling author Stephen King, is expected to testify at trial King’s works are currently published by Simon & Schuster, but he has a voice against the merger Author of Carrie, The Shining and many other favorites, King willingly — even passionately — put himself in opposition to Simon & Schuster, his old publisher. He was not chosen by the government just because of his fame, but because of his public criticism of the US$2.2 billion (over US$2.8 billion) deal, announced in late 2021, to join the two largest pu

Wagatha Christie's defamation trial ends in defeat for Rebekah Vardy

Coleen Rooney, wife of former England football captain Wayne, has emerged victorious in a defamation case with another footballer partner after a High Court judge agreed that Rebekah Vardy had leaked her story to the press. Key points: Rebekah Vardy has sued Coleen Rooney for a now-famous Instagram post accusing her of leaking private stories to the tabloids A judge finds Ms Rooney’s allegations “substantially true” During the trial, it was revealed that the key evidence – a cell phone containing incriminating text – was thrown into the North Sea. In a case that has gripped the public with a mix of glamour, sports and amateur detectives, the judge backed Ms Rooney’s public statement that Ms Vardy had leaked personal details about her to the tabloid The Sun. Vardy said he was “devastated” by the decision, saying “this is something I cannot accept.” The intrigue began almost three years ago when Rooney became suspicious about his personal life story appearing in The Sun, and became a det

Start time for trial stage 20 of the Tour de France - Cycling Tips

The final test of the Tour de France 2022 has arrived. Forty kilometers against time, only humans and machines. They call it the truth race for a reason. Phase 20 of the time trial begins at Lacapele-Marival and ends at Rocamadour. It was an exciting and exhausting final time trial to decide on the yellow jersey once and for all before the arrival of the race in Paris. The 40km length is the length we’ve seen in Tour races against time in recent years and means we could see a big gap forming. A bad day can result in more than a minute lost. Most of the track is pretty flat before the two minor climbs in the last 5km, just to increase the pressure if the GC is still close. The Côte de Mags was the first, 1.6 km at 4.7%, before the final climb to the finish line. The Côte de l’Hospitalet is 1.5 km long with an average slope of 7.8%. With a Netflix camera in tow, ASO has designed this one for potential fireworks. Fingers crossed. Profile of the 20th stage of the Tour de France 202

The experimental vaccine was manufactured by Moderna, Inc., (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and developed in collaboration with the NIAID Vaccine Research Center. It is based on platform messenger RNA (mRNA)—the technology used in several approved COVID-19 vaccines. NIAID is sponsoring the Phase 1 clinical study, which is being conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Nipah virus infection is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it is transmitted between animals and humans. Fruit bats are the natural hosts of this virus. The f

Aussies spin as a dozen debuts, Chandimal inspires SL Dinesh Chandimal tore Australia’s heart out in the morning, and Prabath Jayasuriya surgically cut off their limbs in the evening as Sri Lanka surged to a famous series-level win late in day four of the second Test at Galle. The Aussies succumbed to their first inning defeat in six years, succumbing to 151 in their second inning as the first player Jayasuriya, after the first six wicket innings, ended their tour quickly and finished with a game-best score (12-177) by a Sri Lankan on debut. Jayasuriya (6-59 in the second inning) confused tourists as he picked up the precious scalps of Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne before keeping Mitchell Swepson’s clean-bowling for the sealing goal in the final hour of day four. The visitors’ fortunes were confirmed at just 41 overs, with the final margin of victory – one inning and 39 runs – marking a remarkable achievement for a Sri Lankan side who lost five players due to COVID-

Universal flu vaccine enters phase 1 trial

A flu vaccine designed to protect against a different strain of virus — and eliminate the annual flu vaccine guessing game — has entered phase 1 clinical trials. A new vaccine candidate, designed to fight avian influenza or bird flu viruses, has been administered to healthy adult volunteers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, the NIH announced. Researchers have long sought a universal flu vaccine to fight a rapidly mutating virus — not only to cover our base each flu season but also potentially pre-empt the next pandemic flu strain. “Influenza vaccines that can provide long-term protection against a variety of seasonal influenza viruses as well as those with pandemic potential would be an invaluable public health tool,” said President Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief Medical Advisor. A new universal flu vaccine candidate is entering human trials to test its safety and imm
