Denise says she was treated 'like trash' after paying $75k for a caravan because the ACCC said the industry needed to improve

Image
Denise Tiyse used her inheritance to buy a new caravan in October last year to enjoy some much-needed rest with her husband. Key points: Caravan customers report major problems with vans and poor treatment by suppliers The ACCC says it has received 1,300 complaints over the past five years and that the industry is on notice Supervisors call for stronger laws and tougher penalties for non-compliant suppliers and manufacturers But instead of a beachside vacation and new memories, Tiyse says the caravan was plagued with problems from the start – from the vehicle itself to an dismissive supplier who didn’t want to fix the problem. According to the Australian Caravan Industry Association, one in 13 Australian households owns a caravan, but the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says the industry has mistreated many buyers. Tiyse says he was called a liar, refused help, lost large sums of money and his family’s life was in danger – all because of a purchase he now fully re

Researchers Improve Electrical and Thermal Properties of Carbon Nanotubes

The preparation of carbon nanotubes via flame synthesis involves a modified combustion system with a carbon source, heat source and suitable catalytic material. To this end, constructing carbon nanotubes on copper (Cu) substrates via flame synthesis is a novel approach to achieve Cu-based carbon nanotube composites. Study: Synthesis of copper-carbon nanotube composites via methane diffusion flame. Image Credit: Evannovostro/Shutterstock.com In an article recently published in the journal Today’s Material: Proceedings , researchers made Cu-based carbon nanotube composites through flame synthesis to improve the electrical and thermal properties of Cu materials. Cleaning and etching of Cu substrates with concentrated sulfuric acid is the first step towards Cu-based carbon nanotubes. The cleaned and carved Cu substrates were subjected to two different laminar flames using methane. The standard diffusion flame configuration (NDF) shows a blue flame, shielding a carbon-rich yellow flame

A 'silver bullet' that could improve Australia's lagging uptake of electric vehicles

Image
Australia’s uptake of electric vehicles (EV) is lagging, but tax experts say they have a “silver bullet solution” that will boost sales and help increase the supply of cheaper used EVs. Key points: Business fleets account for 40 percent of light vehicle sales, but almost no electric vehicles Federal tax law acts as a disincentive, experts say Changing this could quickly drive EV uptake and provide consumers with a cheaper supply of used EVs The Commonwealth-funded climate-focused research center RACE for 2030 has released a report recommending tax reforms similar to those in Europe to encourage fleet managers to buy EVs, rather than internal combustion engine (ICEV) vehicles. Prepared by tax experts from the universities of Monash and Griffith, the report describes a sad situation: business fleets (which include government and corporate vehicles) account for 40 percent of light vehicle sales, but almost no electric vehicles. Of the more than 600,000 passenger vehicles and light SUVs so
