What are the electric vehicle e-bikes that we have been ignoring?

Image
In an effort to decarbonise the Australian economy, much has been made of the need to switch to electric cars. But proponents say there’s a much cheaper and greener EV to consider – the electric bike. While you may have to be on a 12-month waiting list and make at least $40,000 to buy a new electric car in Australia right now, you can get a two-wheeler with a battery for less than 10 cents to charge, pretty easily. Chris Jones, president of the Australian Electric Vehicles Association, says many of us forget that bicycles are a form of transportation, and often see them only for fitness and recreation. Chris Jones says EVs on two wheels seem to be forgotten by policymakers. ( ABC Radio Perth: Emma Wynne ) “It’s kind of sad that these simple, highly efficient and very affordable electric vehicles are so often overlooked,” said Dr Jones. “I think a lot of people, especially in Perth, have always looked at bicycles as a toy or recreation; they are very rarely seen as transportation.” But

Victoria's electric vehicle road tax emerges as a new Robodebt fiasco

It seems that the Victorian ‘debate’ on Road User Fees (RUC) has been described by the Victorian Government as one of two positions – those who support the RUC, and those who are painted as fully accepting the need for it and how it works, and those who complain and are painted as ‘ tax evader’. Unfortunately, this reminds me of the bad past of previous federal governments targeting beneficiaries for savings through automated (and disabled) benefit accounting systems, while characterizing recipients and advocacy groups as ‘money crooks’ or their supporters. That puts me in an awkward position, because I’m both: support RUC in general and its transition to a new form to include electric vehicles (EVs) when the EV Transition itself occurs (after all, we already paid for it based on distance traveled via a gasoline per liter tax – which will disappear as fossil fuel sales decline) and both from personal experience (and reports coming in from readers of TheDriven), find RUC Victoria’s curr

LandCruisers are 'better than money in the bank' in the hot second-hand market, appraisers say. But the European badge is in the dump

Demand for some sectors of the used vehicle market has “fallen off a cliff”, according to a leading assessor, while demand for needs-based vehicles from “bubble hatches” to workhorse LandCruiser Toyota remains hot. Key points: A vehicle auctioneer says practicality, not status, now drives buying decisions The golden age of ag contributed to a huge demand for farm equipment and tools, along with an instant asset write-off of $150,000 LandCruiser in particular demands more used than new The COVID-19 production and delivery delays have created unprecedented demand in the used vehicle market. But auctioneer and appraiser Simon Cotter said with rising interest rates there is now a duality in the vehicle market, with demand for luxury vehicles falling while workhorse and budget options continue to sell at or even above retail prices. Our sale last week was the first sale since the COVID outbreak where, with certain products, the lack of interest was very noticeable on the auction floor, he s
