Victoria demands 'immediate action' to prevent gas supply crisis

Image
On Wednesday, Queensland Energy Minister Mick de Brenni claimed his country had done the heavy lifting in the national energy market. Load “We send 300 terajoules of gas per day to the southern states, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes,” de Brenni said. “We are providing these supplies to help Victorians and NSW residents through one of their toughest winters on record.” Australia’s energy market remains in disarray. Professor Bruce Mountain, director of the Victorian Center for Energy Policy, said coal-fired power generation was now “past its prime” and there was a shortage of wind and solar power available to offset the decline in coal. “As a result, gas has been forced to enter the market to produce much more electricity than usual,” he said. “We have a gas generation that is not efficient for power, the goal is purely to fill the peak, but it doesn’t just fill the peak, it runs very often, so it drains a lot of gas out of the system.” Mountain said Victoria was produ

Energy market operator intervenes to prevent gas shortage as Victorian reserves fall

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has stepped in to prevent a potential gas shortage in Victoria, the state’s energy minister said. Key points: Energy market operator AEMO says guaranteed gas supply will ensure transparency in the market The Victorian government has ruled out lifting the wholesale gas price cap in response to pressure on supply State opposition calls for reduced gas exports from Victoria Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio told ABC Radio Melbourne that AEMO triggered a gas supply guarantee on Tuesday afternoon, as reserves at storage facilities in the state’s southwest continued to fall. “That means they will have greater visibility of gas sales and supply across markets including Victoria but in other states, to get transparency here,” he said. “When you get more transparency in the market, the market starts to change its behavior, and to be honest, the market has slipped too much here. “More visibility means, as it did in April [when the guarantee wa

How do you prevent the next big lettuce shortage? Growing plants in disguise could be the answer

Image
When the price of lettuce jumped to $10 due to extreme weather in New South Wales and Queensland, it caused a shockwave across the country, but some farmers in the flood zone were left relatively unscathed – as they grew in the shade. Key points: Protected crops have seen significant growth in Australia over the last 10 years Two Lockyer Valley farmers say protected plantings reduce flood damage on their property Experts say farming under cover is inevitable with more extreme and varied weather events Now experts say protected plantings could be key to keeping cabbages away from burgers and spring rolls in their place and getting farmers back to planting after extreme weather. What are protected plants? Protected crops are the production of horticultural crops under or within structures. It’s more than just a greenhouse according to Paul Gauthier, who is professor of protected plants with the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation. He said there are three types of prot

Banning artificial stones could prevent 100 lung cancers and 1,000 cases of silicosis, where dust leaves scars on the lungs

A well-fitting respirator can reduce the risk. Credit: Shutterstock Silica dust is a very fine dust that is produced when products such as bricks, concrete and pavers are cut or drilled. Artificial stone, which is used primarily for kitchen countertops, is a very strong source of silica dust. Inhaling this dust into the lungs can cause severe long-term damage. This can lead to difficulty breathing, scarring of the lungs (silicosis) and lung cancer. In our recently published report, we estimate that without action, Australian workers will develop over 10,000 lung cancers in the future and nearly 104,000 cases of silicosis over their lifetime due to exposure to silica dust. This is about 1% of all future lung cancers in the Australian adult population. However, banning artificial stone would reduce silica exposure and could prevent 100 lung cancers and nearly 1,000 cases of silicosis over the lifet

Science News | Scientists Develop Unique Thermogel to Help Prevent Retinal Scars | NewestLY

Washington [US]July 9 (ANI): A group of Singaporean scientists have developed a biofunctional thermogel, a type of synthetic polymer, to prevent retinal scarring caused by failed retinal detachment repair surgery, according to a new study. The research findings were published in the journal Nature. Read Also | Sri Lankan Prime Minister Announces Resignation, Amid Economic Crisis Read @ANI’s Story… – Latest Tweet by ANI Digital. Research reveals that proliferative vitreoretinopathy occurs when retinal scar tissue prevents the retina from healing and falling back into place. And it’s said that it accounts for more than 75 percent of failed retinal detachment surgeries, and can result in vision loss or blindness if left untreated. Current treatment options for PVR are limited to surgical removal of this scar membrane with preserved visual recovery. This work highlights the potential use of synthetic polymers alone to modulate cellular behavior and, for the first time, offers a novel th
