Sometimes you just want to read a pure love story. It's Ivy and Yoey's - ABC Everyday

The love that Ivy McGowan and Yoey Maxwell have is a rare breed. In the five years since they met by chance at a whimsical picnic in Naarm/Melbourne on Ivy’s 22nd birthday, it’s grown into something they both thought they only dared to dream of. We asked them to share their stories with us. What are your first impressions of each other? Ivy: Looking back, it feels like things slowed down when I met Yoey. I remember feeling calm the first time we spoke. They spoke to me as if I was the only person that mattered at the time even though there was so much else going on that day. Be a part of the ABC Everyday community by joining our Facebook group. Yo: One of my first thoughts was, “Ooh, he’s a hugger!” Because Ivy gave me a big one when we met and I’m not exactly a cuddler, but it was really nice. Then I remember thinking he was quiet and shy at the same time very warm and friendly. When we spoke, he didn’t reveal much about himself, which gave ...

Australian story of John Deer surviving after being stranded 17km offshore in Panama

Image
When Australian sailor John Deer fell off his yacht in the Caribbean Sea, he thought he wouldn’t make it through the night alive. But when he saw his boat drift off into the distance, the 41-year-old realized he had a choice: wait for the waves to finally pull him down or try to swim the 17km to shore. ‘I kind of stepped on the water for a second and I thought, ‘Right, I’m going to die’,’ he told 60Minutes. ‘Then I thought ‘am I just going to float and wait for my lungs to fill with water?’ I might as well start swimming.” “So I started swimming.” Three years ago, Mr Deer left his home in Melbourne to embark on the journey of a lifetime – a solo sailing adventure around the world. He bought a used yacht, called the Julieta, in the Greek Islands and started his journey – sailing across the Mediterranean, visiting Albania, Italy, then exploring the islands around Spain. Despite having no previous sailing ...

The story behind these cakes is heartbreaking, but the makers love to make them

For some children, birthdays are very valuable to celebrate. Jessica Gowers can’t tell you whether her son Riley will make it to the age of 13, 18, or 21. He didn’t think they would see his seventh birthday in March. But, they did. Riley was born with CHARGE syndrome, a complex set of medical problems. Riley with Toy Story cake. ( Provided: Jessica Gowers ) Apart from heart problems, he was deaf, mute, and partially blind. “Riley was born in 2015, we were in the hospital for 11 months. 2016, six months, 2017, six months, 2018, dodging bullets. 2019, four months,” Ms Gowers said. With all the time in the hospital, it’s no wonder Miss Gowers doesn’t have time to bake. Or many other things for that matter. So he called Cake Angels, a team of 2,100 professional decorators across the country who donate incredible custom cakes to children with lifelong or life-limiting conditions. This is not your average banana cake with cream cheese icing. Cakes worth u...

Sens Coffee Co: The inside story of how one worker was fired because 'he didn't text with the smiley emoji'

Image
The worker who was allegedly fired for failing to include an emoji in a text message to his boss has been released to his former employer, in a somewhat ironic fashion. Kristen Gordon told Daily Mail Australia the only comment she wanted to make about her ordeal, in which she was fired from the Gold Coast cafe where she worked, was the eyeroll emoji. Ms Gordon won the Fair Work Commission case against the Sens Catering group, a business that operates two Gold Coast cafes and one in the city of Brisbane – after she was fired on March 13 this year. FWC heard co-owner Phoebe Wang ordered a manager to fire Ms Gordon, who was a casual supervisor at the Southport cafe, following a dispute over the rosters. A colleague told the hearing that Wang, co-owner of Jerry Chen, became angry over the text messages from Ms Gordon, believing they were ‘unfriendly’ because workers did not use smiley emoji. Ms Gordon (pictured) says her response to her ordeal with her former employe...
