Europe feels the pain as the Kremlin war drags on, but, in the long run, Russia will pay a heavy price

Across Europe, signs of distress multiply as Russia’s war in Ukraine drags on: Food banks in Italy feed more people, German officials turn off air conditioning as they prepare plans to ration natural gas and restart coal plants. Key points: Just as Europe is recovering from the pandemic, its economic future looks uncertain as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues Meanwhile, high energy costs, fueled by the war, benefited the Kremlin and kept the ruble But in the long run, economists say, Russia will pay a heavy price for its war A giant utility is asking for a taxpayer bailout, and more to come. Dairy companies wonder how they are going to pasteurize milk. The euro has slumped to a 20-year low against the dollar, and recession predictions are on the rise. Those pressure points are signs of how the conflict — and the fact that the Kremlin is gradually suffocating the natural gas that keeps industry humming — is provoking an energy crisis in Europe and increasing the likelihood of plunging

New computational model can detect cognitive impairment from audio recordings of neuropsychological tests

It takes a lot of time and money to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. After running a lengthy face-to-face neuropsychological exam, the doctor must copy, review, and analyze each response in detail. But researchers at Boston University have developed a new tool that could automate the process and eventually allow it to move online. Their machine learning-powered computational model can detect cognitive impairment from audio recordings of neuropsychological-tests; no in-person appointment required. Their findings were published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association . “This approach brings us one step closer to early intervention,” said Ioannis Paschalidis, co-author of the paper and BU College of Engineering Distinguished Professor of Engineering. He said faster early detection of Alzheimer’s could prompt larger clinical trials that focus on individuals in the early stages of the disease and potentially enable clinical interventions that slow cognitive

Two weeks ago, few would have predicted that divisive Australian star Nick Kyrgios would be the one to stand between Novak Djokovic and his fourth straight Wimbledon title. Key points: World number 1 Serbia says Kyrgios is “a very complete player” Djokovic has faced the Australian twice in his career, losing twice The 35-year-old wants to extend her grand slam title to 21 years Djokovic himself, however, is not surprised Kyrgios will be waiting on the other side of the net in the men’s singles final. The top seeded Serb booked his eighth Wimbledon final by coming from a set down against Britain’s Cameron Norrie on Saturday, while unseeded Kyrgios benefited from a walkover after Spain’s 22-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from the semi-finals through injury. Djokovic has only faced Kyrgios twice in his career, losing twice to him in 2017. So while he will be favorite to claim a seventh Wimbledon crown, he knows exactly how dangerous the unpredictable world number 40 Kyrgio
