Australians get a harsh shock when they open their retirement statements. For most, it was a rare year of loss. Only three funds ended up black. Callum Foote and Michael West investigate super returns and the best performing fund of all, Hostplus. It’s an obvious thing, but it’s still of no value. When interest rates rise, the stock market tends to fall. And that’s exactly what happened to the savings of millions of Australians for the year to June. Opening our pension fund letter, we found that our scores were lower than the previous year. The stock market decline has been compounded by an unusual phenomenon; bonds also fell. Bonds are an important part of a “balanced” super portfolio, and when bond yields (interest rates on debt) rise, bond prices fall. Last Tuesday was the 40th anniversary of my father’s death. On Wednesday my book, Our Dream Summer was about to be launched, which coincidentally made this event even more emotional for me and my brothers and sisters. The title of this book comes from my father’s speech. How my eldest brother described his memories of childhood that our parents gave him. “It was like a long, golden summer,” he said, “the summer of our dreams.” The book took time to happen, just like life. It’s been a decade since I started writing it – over and over, much more than actively – with thoughts fused for countless years before. Radio presenter Jackie ‘O’ Henderson recalled his awkward encounter with Australian actor Michael Caton. He spoke of his ‘bad experience’ with Caton, who is best known for starring in the beloved Aussie film The Castle, on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Thursday. Her name popped up during the daily celebrity birthday segment when her co-host Kyle Sandilands noted Caton had just turned 79.
