(SpaceX via YouTube) An experiment on its way to the International Space Station focuses on a subject as mundane as soil, but could be key to growing crops in space. The NASA-funded experiment — known as Dynamics of Microbiomes in Space, or DynaMoS — is being conducted by researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. DynaMoS utilizes soil and bacteria collected at the Washington State University field site in Prosser, Wash. “Soil microbes are hidden players of life support systems on planet Earth,” PNNL chief scientist Janet Jansson, principal investigator for the DynaMoS experiment, explained during a pre-launch press conference. Bacteria work to break down organic matter and provide nutrients for growing plants. Space missions could expand the reach of microbes beyond our home planet. “Soil microbes can help make conditions on the lunar and Martian surfaces more favorable for plant growth,” Jansson said. “The

Why WA is bucking the national trend towards apartments

As interest rates continue to rise, some real estate experts expect an increase in apartment sales across Australia due to the large gap between the average house and unit prices. The Reserve Bank last week increased its interest rate target by 50 basis points to 1.35 percent. It also increased the interest rate on the exchange’s settlement balance by 50 basis points to 1.25 percent. James Kirkland, director of sales for national real estate agency Upside Realty, told NCA NewsWire that buyers’ borrowing power is dwindling and it’s being felt across the property market. Kirkland said he hopes the lifestyle apartments, which offer green space and amenities, will be seen as a viable alternative for those who can no longer afford a home. “Since March 2020, the value of the capital city unit has increased 9.8 percent, compared to 24.7 percent for houses, which makes it a more affordable option for the community,” he said. Many Precursors For RNA Have Been Detected In Our Galactic Center

The heart of the Milky Way appears to be a hotspot for molecules that combine to form RNA. A new survey of the thick molecular cloud that shrouds the galactic center has revealed the presence of various nitriles – organic molecules that are often toxic in isolation, but are also molecular building blocks essential for life. The increase in prebiotic molecules (molecules involved in the emergence of life) identified at the center of galaxies, particularly those associated with RNA, has implications for our understanding of how life emerged in the Universe – and how it happened on Earth. “Here we show that the chemistry occurring in the interstellar medium is able to efficiently form some of the nitriles, which are key molecular precursors of the ‘RNA World’ scenario,” explains astrobiologist Víctor Rivilla of the Spanish National Research Council and National Institutes. Aerospace Technology in Spain. Exactly how life arose on Earth is a mystery that basic scientists are eager to achie
