How many post-credits scenes for Thor: Love and Thunder?
There are two post-credits scenes in Thor: Love and Thunder. The first comes after the stylized credits featuring all the major stars and cameos. The second scene arrived about four minutes later after the full credits had finished rolling.
Now comes the fun part: outlining what this means. So, if you’ve seen the film, read on for a deeper look into this post-credits sequence. But a word of warning – we’re getting into heavy spoiler territory as we discussed Plot details MAJOR Thor: Love and Thunder from here out.
Thor: Love and Thunder post-credits scene, explained *spoiler*
Still here? Great, that means you’ve seen the post-credits sequence of Thor 4. And there’s a lot to get into…
The first scene appears after the main stylized credits. It reveals Zeus Russell Crowe survived Thor’s previous attack with Lightning Bolt – and he wants revenge. The scene takes place again in Almighty City where Zeus is being bullied by his maid. While they nursed his wound, he gave a speech to the camera about how superheroes had become the new Gods. “It seems to me that being God used to mean something,” he said. “Now that people just want superheroes, when did we become a joke?”
He vows to teach them a lesson before the cameras turn to who he’s talking to. Here, we get our first look at Hercules in his glittering golden armor. Heroes have been mentioned earlier in the film when Thor has discussed who will be in Almighty City with Korg, Jane, and Valkyrie.
However, this is the first look we get at a new MCU character – with Brett Goldstein playing him. The casting of Ted Lasso Goldstein has not previously been announced so it is a big secret that Waititi and the Marvel team managed to keep it a secret. (Find out more in our guide to Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder.)
We don’t see much of him, but he looks set to play a big role in the future of the MCU. Hercules has been set on a path of vengeance against Thor by Zeus so it’s likely the pair will meet again. This might happen in a potential fifth Thor film, which Kevin Feige recently discussed.
Hercules is a big part of Marvel comics. He is heavily based on Hercules from Greek mythology, who was the son of Zeus and had a similar background to the myth. As such, he possesses all the usual abilities of an Olympian God, including superhuman strength, endurance, speed, reflexes, stamina, and endurance.
He has appeared as part of the Avengers comics since 1964, as well as running his own limited series in the late nineties and early 2010s. However, Hercules appears most often in the Thor comics, where he usually acts as the aide to the God of Thunder.
While it’s likely that the MCU will take on this backdrop, it appears Goldstein’s version may be being set up as a potential villain. We’ll have to wait to see if Feige or any of the actors reveal more about what role he will be playing in the MCU.
The second post-credits scene comes right at the end. This one explains that Jane Natalie Portman ended up in Valhalla after she died in Thor’s arms. The scene begins when he arrives through the gates of the afterlife and is greeted by Heimdall (Idris Elba). She thanks him for helping look after her son Astrid – or Axl, after the Guns ‘n’ Roses singer, as she prefers – while she watches with wide eyes. This is a fitting ending for Portman’s Jane who seems happy and healthy and can finally rest after battling cancer. (We have a guide for everyone who died in Thor: Love and Thunder in case you missed some of the other deaths.)
It’s unclear if this is the last we’ll see of Portman’s Foster. The door opened for him to potentially appear in visions or scenes of the afterlife. Otherwise, it would be a fitting farewell to a beloved character in the MCU. Nice to see Heimdall too. He was killed by Thanos at the start of Avengers: Infinity War and we haven’t seen Elba’s gatekeeper since.
We get some sort of final post-credits reward. After the Valhalla scene ended, it was confirmed that “Thor would return”. No more context has been given, but it’s a good indication that we’ll see Hemsworth return as the God of Thunder in the near future for the Thor 5 candidate.
