Yes, Hunted is a fun dumb TV... and I've been watching it every minute of it

Hunted is a very silly show and I have watched every minute of it. Ten’s reality breakout competition in which contestants try to stay one step ahead of the production’s professional pursuers – alternative title: Tom Clancy’s Amazing Race – is a blanket of simulation and shortcuts tied to a fantastic concept and some interesting implications. It also features a tall man with a thick beard who tries to disguise himself as “nonna” so as not to draw attention to himself. In this series being serious is always going crazy.

If you’ve ever enjoyed the many sequences in Jason Bourne’s films where the supporting cast stand in a dark control room full of surveillance technology and bark orders as they chase the elusive mine, Hunted maybe for you. Based on the successful British format (they even made a celebrity edition, which is a funny concept), the show is a tricky game of tag: with limited resources and a lack of digital privacy, nine teams of two must last for 21 days. run within the Victorian border.

Let’s get this out of the way: “Some of the powers available to government agencies including electronic surveillance have been simulated in production Huntedread the closing credits. Much of the gameplay – the idea that Hunters have access to CCTV and smartphones, for example – is duplicated by the production team, although both Hunters and Hunted are committed to staying in character and pretending everything is happening in real-time. Paranoid can’t watch Hunted. Then again, maybe they can win it?

None of this really matters. For starters, the stitching is so obvious that some viewers are happy to point out the production failure; I watched with a 16 year old scoffing that Google Maps and Microsoft Word did a lot of the heavy lifting at Hunter HQ. More importantly, the idea is sticky. Can you survive the run? Do you have the instinct not to give up your position? Can you handle the flaws, unlike the team who crave champagne some day?

Like survivorviewers can at least imagine themselves to be contestants Hunted. That has helped make the series a mid-season success for Ten, standing out in the ratings and – most importantly – not exceeding its rave reviews with just nine episodes spread over three weeks. This is a palate cleanser, with near misses and catches shared in each installment. It’s also a reminder that maybe we’re more open to new reality TV shows than the network envisions. Please give us more new concepts and make them this stupid.

“You are free to go wherever you need to go,” senior Hunter Reece Dewar would bark at one of the ground teams, which sounds interesting but actually means politely knocking on someone’s door. All Hunters have impeccable credentials, whether they are ex-senior police officers, intelligence analysts, or ex-SAS operatives. But not all of them can act. I’m sure that one of the HQ analysts didn’t even notice.

At times the tone became questionable, such as when a Hunter driving around a country town muttered, “come on, girls, where are you?” but it’s nice to see people commit to this illusion. Some teams have elaborate disguises and tactics, while others have crazy strategies that have you screaming in front of the screen. I even have a favorite team of Ground Hunters, Jason Spivey and Michelle Corlett of Alpha Team, though I’d rather recognize them as the day-to-day uncles Jason Statham and Charlize Theron.
