What Arrives on Screen: August 2022 - Dark Horizons
Here we continue the monthly section that will offer a quick checklist of what’s coming to theaters, VOD & SVOD services, and gaming platforms over the coming weeks.
This is not an exhaustive list, but rather one featuring a main title and a few minor titles. Titles are separated by date and sorted by movies & movie rentals first, then TV, then games.
On the film front, the “Predator” franchise returns with a live premiere to Hulu “Prey,” Brad Pitt takes on a lot of killers in “Bullet Train,” George Miller returns with “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” Apple tries to be Pixar with “ Luck,” Idris Elba faces off against a man-eating lion in “Beast,” and Kevin Bacon leads an evil conversion camp in “They/Them.”
There’s also Jamie Foxx fighting vampires in “Day Shift,” Esther’s return in the prequel “Orphan: First Kill,” Lovecraftian gloryhole dark comedy “Glorious,” Stallone being a superhero in “Samaritan,” there’s HBO’s Princess Diana documentary, the documentary film. John McAfee’s “Running with the Devil,” and Amazon premiered Ron Howard’s Thai cave rescue drama “Thirteen Lives.”
On the TV front are several acclaimed new series including the prequel “Game of Thrones” the HBO spinoff “House of the Dragon,” the old Netflix TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” comics, the most recent “Star Wars” series with “Andor,” while Marvel released the legal comedy “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and a series of “I Am Groot” short films.
On the new series front, Apple is bound to be a controversial “Five Days at Memorial,” Amazon’s high-profile adaptation of the “A League of Their Own” series, Mike Judge bringing back “Beavis and Butt-Head,” an import of the British mini-series “The Undeclared War,” soccer club FX documentary “Welcome to Wrexham,” anime “Tekken: Bloodline,” new animated FX comedy “Little Demon”.
From their returning side, there are the final seasons of “Locke & Key” and “See,” the thirteenth season of “Archer,” and the return of recent success stories like “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” “Kevin Can F— Alone, “Reservation Dogs,” “Industry,” “The Cuphead Show,” “Stargirl,” “Resident Alien,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” “Tales of the Walking Dead” and the “South Park” special concert.
On the gaming front, PC is finally getting the PlayStation-exclusive “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered” and getting all the bells and whistles. SEGA delivers the long-awaited follow-up to the great “Two-Point Hospital” with “Two-Point Campus,” “Destroy All Humans 2 – Reprobed” a classic game sequel remaster, and the “Saints Row” franchise gets a full reboot. There are also some interesting indies like “Cult of the Lamb” and “Midnight Fight Express”.
