Speaking to Jess Rowe on her podcast The Big Talk Show, Turia explained that she and her father were “very logical and practical” by nature, and she told him she wanted to die because “she would know where she came from”.

‘I said, ‘I want to kill myself, I don’t want to be here” he recalls.

‘And my dad said, ‘well the doctors say you’ll be back on your feet in five years.

“So give yourself five years and see how you are and if in five years you want to kill yourself you can do it”.

‘I thought, that’s great, I have a timeline, I have something to work on’.

Turia says when she tries to stay motivated during her recovery, she often thinks ‘I can’t do this, it’s so hard’.

Turia recently said ‘she is ‘proud’ of her relationship with Michael a decade after the traumatic experience that could have separated them.

The couple got engaged in 2015, with Michael previously revealing that he bought the diamond ring while Turia was in intensive care in 2011.

The couple welcomed their first son, Hakavai, in December 2017, and their second baby boy, Rahi, in February 2020.

Reflecting on the romance between the couple – who started dating two years before he suffered the grisly burns – he said they were ‘living their best lives’.

“I’m very proud of my relationship with Michael,” she told Stellar Magazine.

We’ve been through something really big and traumatic, and this may sound far-fetched, but we’re living our best lives and we’re happy.

‘We have these beautiful children together, and even though we’re not perfect, we accept each other.’

Turia adds that like all couples, they have their ups and downs, but love each other for all their qualities, good and not so good.

‘It’s easy to like someone for their good qualities and want to change their not-so-good qualities. We’re good at accepting each other as we are,” he said.

Turia recently told The Sydney Morning Herald that she ‘feels the sexiest’ with her partner, Michael.

‘It sounds a bit tragic, but I think it’s beautiful at the same time’ he said.
