Traders, investment bankers, law and mining graduates demand six-figure salaries after university

Graduates demand salaries of up to $350,000 as companies struggle to find the best and brightest workers just weeks after they leave university.

Those who finish university as medical practitioners, dentists, software engineers, and stock traders can earn very high six-figure salaries, and can also expect lots of bonuses and extra perks.

Australia faces dire skills shortages and a tough labor market as two years of drunkenness from our strict border closures saw many backpackers leave the country and migrants slowly returned.

The large number of jobs on the market – with fewer people to fill them – means the balance of power falls in the hands of job seekers.

Big recruiters are now expanding their entry-level program by offering high salaries and perks as smaller players also seek to attract title holders, the Australian Financial Review reports.

Jeffrey Duncan, co-founder of Prosple, a site that advertises graduate and internship roles, said he was surprised at how high graduate salaries would be in 2022.

“I’ve never seen salaries jump so much in a year before,” he said.

‘Top employers in the traditional, high-paying sector have taken it to new heights in the last 12 months.’

He crunched a few numbers with the publication, explaining that the ‘most wanted graduates’ lead $350,000 as a trader and $200,000 as an investment banker.

Mr Duncan said salaries for graduate work in mining, oil and gas were also nothing to scoff at, paying up to $145,000.

Law graduates can also ask for up to $130,000, while those in technology can ask for $120,000 and management consultant salaries up to $115,000.

But the roles of the highest-paid graduates, in addition to traders and investment bankers, come in the form of medical practitioners and dentists.

A job search conducted by Daily Mail Australia shows medical practices regularly offer salaries between $200,000 and $400,000.

For those in the medical field, the practice usually requires entry-level medical practitioners and dentists to transfer.

The tech industry also provides entry-level roles with six-figure salaries, with software engineers among the highest earners.

Data collected for The Australian shows annual graduate salaries for the top 10 technology companies range from $147,000 to $350,000.

Jane Street tops the list, offering a salary of $350,000 for software engineer graduates, nearly six times the average Australian worker’s salary.

Optiver and IMC each paid $250,000 for the same position while Akuna Capital, Atlassian, and Google all offered $200,000.

A first-year product manager at Microsoft can expect a salary of $187,000 while a software engineer salary at Canva starts at $173,000

Rounding out the top 10 is Amazon, which offers $153,000 to graduate software engineers, while graduate business analyst Kearney offers $147,000.

Gym memberships, weekly massages, daily breakfast, lunch, annual company trips, work-from-home benefits, and competitive relocation packages are some of the advantages in Optiver’s job description for graduate software developers.

The company also offers an internship salary package of up to $175,000, plus benefits and says an attractive salary reflects the demands for skills and expertise of graduates.
