Tesla makes navigation a monthly subscription after the first eight years

New Tesla orders no longer come with lifetime access to satellite navigation. Instead, it forms part of a monthly subscription eight years after taking delivery of a new vehicle.

Connectivity features that are taken for granted in modern luxury cars – including satellite navigation – will now become optional in Tesla’s newly ordered electric cars – after they have been in operation for eight years.

Found by Teslaratiall new Tesla vehicles ordered globally after Wednesday 20 July 2022 will no longer come with lifetime access to the Standard Connectivity plan.

Instead, the Standard Connectivity plan – which includes satellite navigation, Bluetooth, playback via USB drive, and FM radio – expires after eight years from the date of shipment, and becomes an optional addition.

In North America, the Standard Connectivity package also includes SiriusXM satellite radio capabilities.

Tesla didn’t say whether basic functionality like Bluetooth and FM radio would be phased out once the free Standard Connectivity subscription expires after eight years. However, Tesla did say certain navigation functions would be removed.

“Without Standard Connectivity, access to some connectivity features, including those using cellular data or third-party licenses, may be changed or removed. Standard Connectivity features that may change at this time include maps, navigation, voice commands, and more,” Tesla’s website says. .

Tesla hasn’t confirmed how much Standard Connectivity will cost once the included eight-year subscription expires — although the upgraded Premium Connectivity plan, which adds live traffic, video streaming, and other features, costs $9.99 per month.

The Standard Connectivity subscription also applies to used vehicles purchased (or transferred) after 20 July 2022, available for eight years after the vehicle has been “served… as a demonstration or service vehicle”, or “shipped as new”, whichever comes first. .

New Tesla cars ordered before July 20, 2022 will carry a lifetime subscription to Standard Connectivity – even if they don’t ship until 2023.

While subscription services are being piloted in the auto industry – including BMW, which recently introduced a monthly fee for heated seats – Tesla is the first major car brand to make core systems like satellite navigation an optional subscription-based addition.

The Premium Connectivity Plan, offered as a monthly subscription from 30 June 2019, adds live traffic and satellite maps for navigation systems, built-in music and video streaming, in-car karaoke apps, and internet browsers.

All Tesla vehicles come with a 30-day trial for Premium Connectivity services; after that a monthly fee of $AU9.99 is charged.

Lifetime Standard Connectivity subscription is the latest feature cut from new Tesla vehicles; The phone charging cable that came with it for connecting to a home’s electrical socket was removed from a new order placed earlier this month.
