Stunning details revealed as Prince Harry speaks at the UN

Britain’s Prince Harry raised an eyebrow as he gave his keynote address at the UN General Assembly on Monday – with many seats empty in the room as he delivered it.

The Duke of Sussex was chosen to appear during the annual celebrations of Nelson Mandela International Day – paying homage to the legacy of South Africa’s anti-apartheid leader who spent 27 years in prison and became the country’s first black leader.

He arrived hand in hand with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – marking the couple’s first public appearance since Queen’s Jubilee.

During his speech, the 37-year-old Harry recalled a photo of his late mother, Princess Diana and Mandela taken in Cape Town in 1997, shortly before his death.

He said the photo, given to him recently by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is “on my wall and in my heart every day.”

“When I first saw the photo, the immediate thing that came out was the joy on my mother’s face,” said Harry.

“Her joy — recklessness, even.

“The pure joy of being in fellowship with other souls so committed to the service of humanity.

“Then I saw Mandela. Here is a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, asked to heal his country from the ruins of its past and change it for the future.”

Later in his speech, he noted that the world still faces the same challenges that existed during Mandela’s life including racial intolerance, the gap between rich and poor, hunger and food insecurity, war and climate change.

He also described his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, as his “soul mate”.

However, critics were not impressed by the royal appearance, with Russell Myers, Royal Editor for England Daily mirrortell Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David ‘Kochie’ Koch: “People around the world are scratching their heads”.

“Poor old Harry, look at the crowds gathered and there aren’t too many in the room – so you can make as much as you like,” said Myers.

“I’m sure many people around the world will hear about his speech, maybe even listen to it. He tackles some very big issues, climate change, weapons of lies and disinformation on the internet.

“He even waded through – which is brave enough for a British prince, to speak on constitutional issues in the US – the massive Roe versus Wade scandal that is currently underway in the US.

“Look, a lot of people are wondering why Harry is talking about it. As usual with him, he will share opinions. I think this is one example.”

Natalie Barr explained that traditionally, members of the royal family were not allowed to talk about political matters.

“But is he a member of the royal family again? Is it important?” he asked.

“Well, I think so,” Myers replied. “We should not allow a British prince to wade into politics like this. So this is a very big big problem in the United States and it’s definitely going to ruffle the feathers.

“You talk about why Harry is there, why is Meghan Markle there? She seemed to be only there to hold her hand throughout the ceremony – and she didn’t look too happy about it when it was caught on camera.

“I’m sure Harry has a lot to say but maybe we should all ask someone who talks about climate change and still rides big fuel-guzzling motorbikes and flies private jets. It doesn’t suit the majority of people which I don’t think.”

Kochie admitted there were “a lot of empty seats” during the Duke’s speech.

“There weren’t many people in the room,” he added. “But he has a good memory of pictures of Mandela and Princess Diana.”

“He did and this is something that will stick with Harry for the rest of his life,” Myers replied.

“Memories of his mother. This was something he had spoken about publicly in the past. That’s a great story….it’s very appropriate for the moment. I think many people have seen that [photo] in the past and it evokes some pretty good memories.”

“Of all the people in the world who are close to Mandela or part of his activists around the world, why choose Prince Harry?” Kochie asked Nat after the interview.

“It doesn’t look very good,” Nat mused. “It felt like they were looking – both – looking for some sort of relevance.”
