Natalie Portman Reacts to Thor's Post-Credit Scene Shock

Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster is easily one of the most anticipated parts Thor: Love and Thunder for many viewers. The introduction of Mighty Thor proved to be a fantastic addition to the film, which definitely had the actress having a lot of fun. As exciting as it was, fans were shocked by the tragedy before the film ended: his cancer hit him.

After his death, the next time viewers see him is when his soul arrives at Valhalla, where he is greeted by Heimdall of Idris Elba. So is this the end of her character, or could she appear again on the line?

Portman herself had previously noted that she was “open to anything” so if the opportunity presented itself, it seemed like a game.

Now, the actress is once again talking about her MCU fate, and more specifically, about the shock of that post-credits scene.

In an interview with the D23 Insider Disney Podcast, Thor: Love and ThunderNatalie Portman talks about Jane Foster reaching Valhalla in the post-credits scene, her future at Marvel, and the logistics behind some of the key scenes.

When asked if his MCU journey is over, Portman commented that “it must feel like anything is possible” but make it clear he is “[has] no insight into the answer to that. ” It seems Portman’s answer hasn’t changed much since the last time she talked about her future.

He then talks about the behind-the-scenes logistics where Jane, Valkyrie, and Thor are bound by vines, with Gorr punishing them. Portman reveals how “[they] was in a room that was basically just an ordinary room that had black curtains all around it.” and there “people in blue suits blocked us in and out:”

“So we were in a room that was basically just an ordinary room that had black curtains all around it. And then, we were each on a platform on wheels and with nothing to hold us back… We were just tied to this platform. It was like a pole behind us that we tied so that we wouldn’t fall when they moved it. And then they had guys in blue suits blocking us in and out… and we had to pretend that we were constrained so we’d be like, ‘(mumbles) Mmmmm.’ And then they’ll put it all in later. So yeah, it’s pretty wild.”

While working on the film, one of the important parts of Portman’s appearance was her height. The actress is nine inches shorter than Mighty Thor should be, so the film crew will build on that “very long platform[s]” for him to walk alongside his fellow actors in various scenes:

“So I’m 5’3, and 6 feet of my character which I don’t know has ever happened before in history, that someone had imagined a character for an actor who couldn’t physically fill those shoes. And I’m so grateful for all the film magic that Marvel can provide to make it happen. But many practical solutions to it on set put me on deck. So we’re doing exercises, we’re figuring out the path I’m going to walk on the scene, and they’re going to build this platform. This is a very long platform, for which I am very grateful to our crew for being so generous. And then poor Chris [Hemsworth] and Tessa [Thompson] will constantly have to walk over it to get to their way, and… [they’d] have to pretend like they didn’t jump over the platform. It provides a lot of comedy. But it makes me look tall, so that helps a lot.”

For those wondering what Jane’s last catchphrase was when she whispered into Thor’s ear before he died, it doesn’t look like the answer will be revealed any time soon. Portman claims that “[she’ll] take [that] with [her] to [her] grave.”

What’s the Future of Natalie Portman’s MCU?

The film shows Jane Foster entering Valhalla for a reason. For those who know the character in the comics, he eventually died of his cancer—though, he was resurrected by Thor and Odin before stepping through the gates of the promised land.

While that’s definitely not the case here, Jane ends up becoming a Valkyrie, which is still her mantle today in the source material pages. Given the brotherhood on display between her and Tessa Thompson’s character in the film and all the teasing about how lonely the King of Asgard is, it seems that Natalie Portman’s future is inevitable.

But what will he do in the meantime? Perhaps Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, the original Earth-616, was lounging in the halls of Valhalla—the two of them chasing could make for a pretty entertaining scene.

Thor: Love and Thunder now playing in theaters around the world.
