Kath & Kim will return as cast members reunited for 20th anniversary special

Twenty years ago, during the first episode of a mockumentary-style sitcom Kath & Kim aired on national broadcasters, there are many new languages, clothing and suburban folklore to absorb.

It was May 2002, and the classic episode was titled Sex.

We learned to say Cardonnay and “Look at me”, talk like Prue and Sue and call ourselves sneaky fools, and don’t forget “I have feelings in my waters”, love to dance off the beaten track and guys propose to their girlfriends at Harvey Norman’s Store every where.

Written by Melbourne comedians and actors Jane Turner and Gina Riley, who played mother (Kath Day) and daughter (Kim) respectively in the fictional outer suburbs of Fountain Lakes, the show made history for ABC and later for the Seven Network.

In just four seasons and a total of 32 episodes (plus telemovies and theatrical films), this show – with influences from the reality TV hit Sylvanian Waters and iconic Australian classics Muriel’s Wedding – managed to attract millions of viewers, multiple awards and careers for its cast.

The synopsis for the series goes like this: “Kath Day is enjoying life as an empty nester and has a new man in her life, gourmet sausage maker Kel Knight (Glenn Robbins)”.

“He’s not too happy when his lazy and busy daughter Kim moves back home after problems in her marriage to Brett Craig (Peter Rowsthorn), a computer salesman in Fountain Gate, Kath and Kim’s local shopping complex and a favorite spot.

“Kim’s second best friend, allergy sports fan Sharon Strzelecki (Magda Szubanski), is another regular fixture in Kath’s place,” Australian Screen write.

And now, like Friends reunion or Hey, Hey specifically, five famous people are back together for a 20th anniversary, one-off episode, which will air later this year.

TV Tonight reported on Wednesday Riley, Turner and Szubanski “were understood to be filming at NEP Studios in South Melbourne under a shroud of secrecy” with Robbins and Rowsthorn undoubtedly “in action”.

Clothing, props, storylines and guest appearances

While we’re a long way from knowing what the cast was up to in studio NEP, we can safely assume that they’ll be wearing the outfits that inspired our choices for the costume party.

Think Kath’s second-hand op-shop outfits and Jane Fonda’s G-string workout leotards, and Kim’s horrific fashion trends based on her obsession with weekly women’s gossip magazines like New idea and Women’s Day.

Exo shorts for a brisk walk, Sharon’s netball tunic, they might bring back a blue Holden Barina and an excellent selection of homewares from within their demolished suburban home in the fictional suburb of Fountain Lakes.

Kylie Minogue was in Melbourne last month secretly filming the final Neighbor episode … maybe she also shows up in the studio to film an Epponnee-Raelene cameo Kathleen Darlene Charlene Craig (daughter of Brett and Kim).

Combovers and perms will be back again. The production crew will have a field day.

First time Sex episodes, the plotline is very simple.

Kimmy moves back home, insisting her marriage to Bretty is over. Kim begins to suspect Brett is having an affair and Sharon is stalking him. Kim raised her nose at her mother’s boyfriend choice. And then Kel proposed to Kath at Harvey Norman.

Maybe the storyline will start where the last episode ended in October 2007.

Or maybe focus on the cast sitting around reminiscing and bringing in stars who guested years ago, like Eric Bana, Donna Hay, and The Wiggles.

On the phone Wedding of the CenturySharon married Wayne, played by the late Test cricketer Shane Warne, and Kath and Kel turned their home into an Airbnb, and Kim owed $90,000 in DVD fines that were due.

No way, Jose!

On Thursday, TV Tonight reports on Sonia Kruger of Seven and comedian and actor Celia Pacquola (Rosehaven) was among the “celebrity parade filming this week”.

But, “the paparazzi hadn’t caught him yet when they came out of the building into the black SUV waiting outside”.

TV Tonight said the producers were holding photos of the interior of the Day-Knight Patterson Lakes home before it was demolished, “for green screen use in a 20th anniversary special”.

Industry sources suggest there will be a “hefty price tag associated with the project, which could also be sold to British television” as the Australian broadcaster has not been confirmed, although Seven is “arguably leading the way”.

And just in case you need a little trip down memory lane to keep you coming back Kath & Kim mood, here are some classic moments.
