Kane Cornes accepts Lance Franklin's challenge - Part 1

The debate took place on Monday night.

On Footy ClassifiedKane Cornes and Sam McClure went head-to-head on Sydney’s Lance Franklin.

The topic of conversation is if ‘Buddy’, in his current form, is in the top 200 players in the AFL.

McClure said: “If you pick two teams in a competition to play against someone else, you pick 44 players, you’ll find a place for Franklin.”

Cornes replied: “He’s not among the top 200 players in the game.”

McClure: “Based on what? Looks like you have a certain status. ”

Corns: “Everything. Based on the best and fairest results in the last two years.

“Based on my view. I say this before the ball bounces. This is a hunch. ”

McClure: “Did you just feel it?”

Corns: “100 percent of it.”

Cornes explains the reason further SEN breakfast on Wednesday morning.

“This has been seen as a critique of Buddy Franklin,” he said.

“Sam and I had been talking about this all year, before the ball bounced with Kingy (David King), after reading the top 50 of the Herald Sun.

“They had him at 11 years old, I told Kingy he wasn’t in the top 50.

“I said, ‘This isn’t the Buddy Franklin of 2016, it’s Buddy Franklin now’, and Scoop (McClure) made a fuss about it.

“Obviously, most people would say I’m right that he’s not in the top 50 players in the game at the moment. He was arrested seven times by Griffin Logue over the weekend, for God’s sake.

“It’s nothing to be ashamed of. The Top 50 is the elite of the competition elite.

“I don’t think it’s a criticism to say that Buddy Franklin isn’t in the top 25 per cent in comp. You’re not in the top 10-11 at your club, that’s equivalent to that.”

Cornes is challenged to name 200 players in front of Franklin by SEN Drive’s Andy Maher and Andrew Gaze.

Call it this Friend Challenge.

Players from each club who Cornes says are “in better shape at the moment”, but “don’t get hung up on what he’s done in the past”.

“Don’t get confused here, not a better career than Buddy. He is an Australian football legend, he goes straight to the Hall of Fame.”

“I’ve always used Data Champion as an analytical tool, but I’ve never relied on it alone.

“It’s interesting to see that Franklin’s spear is ranked 207th on their rankings.”
