'Man in Hollywood' Sunrise Nelson Aspen reveals his worst celebrity interview

Longtime US-based entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen has revealed the worst celebrity he has interviewed in his 19 years on air.

On his final day on Friday’s Seven breakfast show, the 58-year-old admitted the hardest Hollywood actors to interview were Kevin Spacey and Vin Diesel.

‘We know you’ve done several celebrity interviews. There must be some that are useless. Who has impressed you the least?’ asked host Natalie Barr.

Aspen replied: ‘If you’re prepared and polite, you know you can always have a good conversation. Unfortunately that’s not the case with Kevin Spacey.’

He explained how he interviewed Spacey, 62, who has since been humiliated from Hollywood for his alleged sexual misconduct, when he was promoting the 2006 film Superman Returns, in which he played villain Lex Luthor.

Aspen, a self-confessed ‘Superman freak’, shaved his head to look more like Lex Luthor for an interview with the now-disgraced Oscar winner, but was left humiliated by the actor’s disapproving reaction.

“He made me feel stupid for doing it and I’m embarrassed,” she said.

Aspen later said Diesel, who is best known for playing Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise, is a great interview but always comes late for junkets.

Another problematic talent is Vin Diesel. I’ve had four interviews with him over the years,” said the veteran journalist.

‘He was a great interview but he had a problem with inconsiderate tardiness. The first time seven hours late, then four hours and two hours.’

Aspen explained how Spacey, 62, (pictured Thursday outside London's Old Bailey, where he faces sexual assault charges), made him 'feel stupid' when he interviewed him for the 2006 film Superman Returns, in which he played villain Lex Luthor.

Friday is Aspen’s last day at Sunrise, Australia’s most-watched breakfast show.

He revealed live on air earlier this month he quit the Channel Seven program after nearly two decades.

He announced his retirement after delivering the morning show business news bulletin live from New York City.

Aspen also said Vin Diesel (left, with Dwayne Johnson), best known for playing Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise, is a great interview but always comes late for junkets.

“After 19 and a half years with Sunrise, I’m giving you two weeks’ notice,” Aspen told Barr and host Michael Usher, who seemed taken aback by the news.

He left Sunrise to finish his new book, Your Home Is Your Castle.

‘I’m going to go and finish my new book … and I’m going to do a book tour, a question and answer event that will cover Australian cities,’ he said.

An annoyed Barr replied: ‘Nelson, it’s been an amazing journey. We’ll miss you, but it’s not goodbye because we have two weeks to say that.’

Aspen has been a Sunrise fixture for nearly 20 years, reporting to a string of hosts including Barr, Samantha Armytage and Melissa Doyle.

He was based in Los Angeles when he first joined the team, and remained the Sunrise ‘man in Hollywood’ even after moving to New York City.

Aspen marked Sunrise’s 15th anniversary in 2018, saying she was grateful for ‘having the opportunity to interview so many stars’.

“Just having the experience of being part of the Sunrise family and coming to Australia and meeting you and the fans… it’s been an amazing opportunity,” he added.

He was recently awarded the International Media Journalist of the Year award by the Publicists Guild of America in 2020, by Jennifer Aniston.

Throughout his career, Aspen has interviewed the likes of Julie Andrews, Harrison Ford and Rose Byrne, and has covered all of the major awards for Sunrise, including the Oscars and Golden Globes.
