How Carole inherited Kate's style: Duchess seems to be a fashion inspiration, writes JENNIE BOND

When the Duchess of Cambridge turned to kiss her mother, Carole Middleton, at Wimbledon last week, it summed up how much fun their relationship was.

Seeing their matching smiles light up on the Royal Box also underscores how very similar the two are in style and appearance.

With their long shiny chestnut hair, straight and tucked behind the ears, with the earrings peeking down, the couple clearly channeled the same look.

But where once Kate might be copying her mother’s impeccable style, it seems that at 67, Carole is picking up a page from her eldest child’s fashion book.

From her freshly straightened hair—obviously impressed with the care Kate is getting for her Caribbean tour—to the jewelry and matching gowns, Carole doesn’t overdo ‘Kate-over’.

And why not? After all the make-up and fashion tips Kate has picked up from her mother over the years, it’s only natural that Carole is reaping the rewards of her daughter’s sophistication.

They both called Richard Ward’s hair salon service, so why not share a wardrobe—especially when it’s full of Kate’s?

Take Royal Ascot for example a few weeks ago, when, wearing a breezy pink pleated shirt from British label Me+Em, Carole looked amazing. The dress was very familiar – it was identical to the one her daughter wore in May last year during a visit to Edinburgh.

Did Carole borrow it from Kate’s expansive wardrobe? Possible. Even though Carole wasn’t as tall as the duchess, she definitely had a slim figure to carry her daughter’s clothes. Not only that, he also perfected his look with a black fascinator and matching clutch.

There was more mother-daughter style inspiration at Wimbledon, when Carole arrived on day three of the tournament showing off a stunning blue topaz necklace from one of Kate’s favorite gem designers, Kiki McDonough.

It may even have been borrowed from Kate’s jewelery box, as Kate herself has worn the same jewelery on several occasions.

For me, only a few years older than Carole and with a 32 year old daughter, Emma, I think Kate and her mother have a very beautiful relationship.

There’s something uniquely fun when you realize you can dip into your daughter’s wardrobe. Although I’m not entirely sure Emma will always agree.

It feels a bit risque to hang around in your daughter’s clothes – and a bit overwhelming because it fits!

A striking similarity: Kate wore it first, but Carole wasn’t far behind in this blue version of this tiered Alexander McQueen gown.

It’s also good to get out of your fashion rut from time to time — and who better than a princess to inspire?

I can definitely understand the fact that there are times as a mother when you think your daughter looks so pretty that you might want to emulate her style. Sometimes it takes a little leeway to age, even though Carole’s legs are so beautiful that she can still lift the ends and look elegant. Good for him!

She was a British Airways flight attendant in her 20s, at a time when cabin crew was one of the most glamorous jobs ever.

Kate and Carole both love Kiki McDonough's designs

It's not uncommon for a mother to rob her daughter's jewelry box

Family jewelry: Kate and Carole both love Kiki McDonough’s designs. But it’s not uncommon for a mother to rob her daughter’s jewelry box!

So it’s no surprise that, as the seeds of Kate’s royal romance with William begin to blossom, she might offer her daughter some style advice.

And during the early years of her romance with the prince, Kate’s safe fashion choices often — unsurprisingly — mirrored those of her beloved mother.

But as time goes on, now a confident mother of three and gearing up for her future role as Queen, Kate has really become herself.

It’s great to see this confidence reflected in the women who helped shape it.
