Cyclist seriously injured after flying into crowd in sick Comm Games crash

Two cyclists have been hospitalized in a horror accident that also injured a young girl who was in the crowd at the Commonwealth Games velodrome.

Britons Matt Walls and Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man were the most seriously injured in a crash that also killed a number of other drivers during the men’s 15km scratch qualifying race at Birmingham 2022.

The wall was sent flying into the crowd, while Bostock crashed into the barrier.

Bostock was carried away on a stretcher and Walls was separated from the crowd while he was being treated.

“Following a collision on the men’s side, Matt Walls and Matt Bostock were treated by medics before being taken to hospital for further treatment,” British Cycling tweeted.

“We send our best wishes to the riders and spectators involved in the incident, and will provide further updates if we can.”

The crowd was left to duck for cover after Olympic omnium champion Walls, high on the edge, was hurled into the air, landing in the front seat of the arena.

Walls is climbing a cliff trying to avoid others falling lower, and appears to cut off another wheel before being sent flying over.

One viewer told AAP how Walls’ bikes also flew over the barrier, shooting along the line of spectators, in a scene many experienced observers believe was unprecedented at a main track encounter.

Australian Josh Duffy was one of several drivers to fall in Sunday’s crash but was reported by team officials to be unharmed.

A man in the crowd received treatment for a wound on his arm while a young girl also received attention, reportedly also for the wound.

The accident occurred during the last lap of the race at Lee Valley VeloPark.

The collision resulted in the remainder of the competition in the morning session at the venue being postponed.

It came a day after Australian cyclist Matt Glaetzer crashed into a major high-speed crash in keirin.

The sprinter was left lying battered and bruised on the track, his kit ripped and his bike damaged, after a 70kph spill in a critical mass sprint event.

Joe Truman of England suffered a suspected collarbone fracture and required oxygen at the side of the track in the same incident.
