Big Brother's Reggie Bird Urges People to "Really Vote" for Winner

Chat to the hook by phone after being announced as one of the Brother Royalties vs New Competitors‘ The Last Three winner, 2003 Reggie Bird—the last OG left in the game—says he feels “very good” about everything.

“Second time round, who would have thought, hey!” he laughed. “I’m so excited, I can’t wait for the final.”

Although it seems that Reggie Bird is the key to being the first two times winner Australian sister during a live broadcast on Tuesday, July 12, Bird himself didn’t feel so confident.

He laughed.

“To be honest, I had some tough competition, you know,” he said. “I just didn’t want to get that in my head and then be let down in the end there. And because people have to vote, that’s the biggest thing, to get me over the line.”

Bird went on to say that he was “worried that people will be complacent” and that one of his rivals, Johnson Ashak and Taras Hrubyj-Piper, would sneak in and secure the win.

“I’m facing stiff competition, and they just have to come forward and choose,” Bird repeated. “I’ve played an honest game, and you know, I did the best I could. And I’m funny, and I’m kind, and I do it for my kids! This one is for the kids!” he laughed.

Bird shares two children with ex-husband Dale Sorenson, daughter Mia, 15, and son Lucas, 12. When Lucas was just four weeks old, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Noting that the cubs were “very proud” of their mother, Bird said that “they’re so excited when they watch it, they get excited and they can’t wait to see what’s going to happen, they really love the show.”

After facing many personal struggles over the years — Bird suffers from extensive vision loss, with only nine degrees of center-pin hole vision, no night vision or peripheral vision — the former winner says the $250,000 prize money will be a game changer for him and his family. .

“That doesn’t make sense,” he said. “I just want a roof over our heads for me and the kids, so that’s what I’m going to use the money for, and also to help pay for Lucas’ treatment. Especially for me and the kids to have some kind of security and stability.”

In addition to the money, Bird said that it would be “amazing” to be the show’s first two-time winner, and that it would mean the world to him.

“To make history, to win it twice, what better housemate to do it than me?!” he cried, laughing. “I know it sounds weird but to win it twice would be a dream come true and an honor, to keep the crown on Reggie’s head would be amazing.”

In 2003, Australia fell in love with Bird, watched as she went through a transformative experience, realizing that she didn’t want to go back to her old life.

To come back for Brother Royalties vs New CompetitorsBird said, was “a dream come true.”

“I’ve wanted to do this again for years, I’ve campaigned for all stars for years,” he said.

As for what he learned about himself this time, Bird said that he “really learned that [she] can do anything, because it is very draining mentally, physically, emotionally”.

In fact, one thing we didn’t see at home was that Bird was “getting hurt all the time” they were filming too.

“The first week I twisted my ankle, trying to hide a bag of apples in the cupboard because we had no food,” she laughs. “Then the next one, it was one of the hanging challenges and I fell, and I ended up getting whiplash and I shook my whole back, and then I ripped my left thigh in the home running challenge, the food challenge and then in another hanging challenge at the big slide, it was really high and I was too scared to let go, and when I let go I ripped my other quad, so I have two torn quads, rolled ankles, whiplash, so, I struggled through the injury, all the way !”

However, after “months of physio”, Bird happily reports that he is now “much better than [she] before”. “As we age, it takes a long time to heal!” he exclaimed.

Ultimately, however, Bird wants us to know that “Reggie is still the same old Reggie!”

“I haven’t changed, the only thing that has changed is that my eyes have dropped,” he said. “I’m still the same as I used to be.”

Brother Royalties vs New Competitors will close with a live broadcast tomorrow, Tuesday 12 July, starting at 7:30 pm, only on 7 and 7 Plus.
