The NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the world’s largest annual hackathon, returns this year with the Make Space theme, which emphasizes NASA’s commitment to inclusivity. This year’s challenge will focus on science, technology, and exploration of Earth and space. Enrollment for in-person and virtual events is now open until 2 October.

Space Apps provides a platform where people around the world with a passion for creativity and innovation can use their unique perspectives to tackle challenges created by NASA experts. The challenges range from skill levels, expertise, subject matter, and goals, and cover a spectrum of disciplines and interests that range from artificial intelligence and software development to the arts and storytelling.

Each year, Space Apps enables thousands of people to engage with NASA and its partners uncovering data during hackathons, said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate. It’s great to see the innovative projects created by Space Application Challenge participants and observe their potential to make meaningful contributions to solving some of the most difficult challenges NASA studies on Earth and in space.

Space Apps provides a positive and safe environment that encourages collaboration and a growth mindset. Whether participants explore challenges, learn to be creative, define team roles, learn technical skills, or learn to deal with hiccups that arise during a challenge weekend, the event’s innovative and flexible structure allows attendees to leave enriched, motivated and eager to learn.

Talent is everywhere, but the scarcity of opportunities leaves so much untapped talent and untapped potential, says Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s Earth Sciences Division. There are so many positive stories that have resulted from this challenge that underscore the value of making room for everyone.

Since its founding in 2012, Space Apps has created and continues to grow a global community united by a common interest to solve problems and create impact. Success stories that have resulted directly from these challenges have ranged from creating new products and business ventures, to innovative improvements to existing products, and have helped connect people socially and professionally, giving them access to skills and insights they would otherwise otherwise have. By connecting teams with challenges and experts from space agencies around the world, participants have access to new opportunities and knowledge that can affect them for life.

This year NASA is pleased to announce the addition of the Indian Space Research Organization and the Mexican Space Agency to the list of space agency partners supporting Outer Space Applications. Valuable partners returning from last year include the Australian Space Agency, the Brazilian Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, the ESA (European Space Agency), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the Argentine National Space Activities Commission, the Bahrain National Space Science Agency, the Paraguay Space Agency, and the National Space Agency. South African National Space Agency. Space agency partnerships encourage broader global collaboration and provide a wider platform for participants to contribute to the field of Earth and space science and technology through Space Applications.
