England had the first gap in extra time but Charlie McIntyre’s pass was stolen by Dalton, who immediately returned the favor and had a pass that was intercepted by his rivals.

McIntyre threw it in to help Lee Manning, putting the hosts 11-10 ahead, but England’s hopes were dashed by Dalton in the most dramatic of circumstances just seconds later.

Seeing the gap as Abderrahim Taghrest darted into the two-point arc, Dalton threw in a Hail Mary – and it never looked like it was missing.

That shot sent Australia through to the final against Canada, while England will face Malaysia for the bronze medal.

The Englishman had plopped down on his chair and was so devastated that he lost the Australian’s good sportsmanship was greeted initially with a cold welcome.

Dalton insisted, checking McIntyre one more time before the Englishman accepted his handshake.

Australian basketball players seek triple gold

Australia will battle for gold against Canada in the men’s and women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball final on Tuesday night.

The women’s team had won their semifinal – also against England – earlier on Monday.

Amber Merritt pushed Australia to an early 4-1 lead, scoring four points, before Georgia Inglis and Ella Sabljak increased it to 8-4.

Australia prevented late resistance to win 8-6, with England battling for bronze against Scotland.

Meanwhile, Australia’s able-bodied 3×3 basketball team will also be looking to secure a medal on Tuesday.

The women will first battle New Zealand for bronze before the men face England in a gold medal match.

The men’s team is led by six-time NBL champion Jesse Wagstaff, who is eyeing a unique set of Commonwealth Games gold medals, and fellow former NBL players Daniel Johnson and Greg Hire.

Wagstaff won the traditional five-against-against competition at the 2018 Gold Coast, with the sport being scrapped in favor of 3×3 for Birmingham 2022.

Wright has spent the last few years on the 3×3 world circuit while continuing to play five on one in NBL1.

“I can’t wait; I’ve been dreaming of this moment for three years, ever since I found out that 3×3 would be at the Commonwealth Games,” the 33-year-old said.

“This is it – another sleeper. This is an amazing sport, very fast and fun. You can travel and fight with some close friends.

“I’ve been playing five against five my whole life for 20 years, and then this happened. It gave me a new lease on life and reignited my passion for basketball.”

Just like Tokyo 2020 on Seven, there is one goal to witness every epic feat, every medal moment, every record attempt, and every inspiring round of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
