What's next for Cameron Smith? The coach hopes he becomes the number one golfer

After an incredible victory at The Open, coach Cameron Smith believes the Australian can become world number one.

Grant Field returned to Australia on Wednesday having been alongside Smith during his victory at The Open at St Andrews earlier this week, birding six behind nine to come from behind to win.

Field said it was amazing to be there to see Smith achieve “an incredible feat”.

“It’s something I can’t even describe,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane.

“Going into the last round he had a chance to win and as the nine defenders started to open up and become more real, we headed to the 18th green.

“When he puts out and only Rory (McIlroy) comes in, and when the ball Rory doesn’t find the trophy for the eagles in the last we all go crazy.

Field said it was important to reconnect with Smith and spend time with the number two face-to-face the week before The Open.

“We’ve done quite a bit of maintenance work because I haven’t seen Cam in a long time,” he said.

“During the third round he didn’t putt as well as he would like so we spent time discussing why that happens and often the environment that causes those things, but he was able to adjust and the rest is history.”

Focus on the road to number one

Field says their team approach is to always get better no matter what Smith ranks in the world.

“He’s number two in the world and you would be naive to think he doesn’t want to be number one, but I think we have to be careful not to get distracted by that and focus on what will actually make him number one. one.”

Smith will take a few weeks off before his PGA Tour championship run, where he sits second behind American Scottie Scheffler.

Smith will also represent the International team during the September President’s Cup.

Will Smith go to LIV Golf?

When asked about recent rumors surrounding a $150 million bid to play on Greg Norman’s Golf LIV tour, Field said most players at Smith’s level had made bids.

“He hasn’t made any decisions yet,” he said.

“As far as the numbers go, I won’t have a clue because it’s a management decision.

“I’m sure there are bids and there are ridiculous numbers thrown in with all sorts of players.

“I just helped him hit the ball better.”

Cameron Smith’s dad’s reaction to British Open win

He believes the PGA Tour and LIV Golf need to join forces for the sake of the game.

Unfortunately, I think there’s a bit of ego between the groups that run things and no one wants to be second rate but I think for the good of golf they should stick together.

Field said Smith plans to return to Queensland at the end of the year to play in the Australian summer.

“He really wanted to go home because it’s been almost three years and he made several comments about wanting to go home as soon as possible.”
