After much teasing, Volkswagen has finally given us our first look at the all-new Amarok ute.

While the original Amarok was an all-VW endeavor, this time development has been shared with Ford, meaning the new Amarok is based on the same platform as the new Ford Ranger, as well as sharing a number of body panels, interior switchgear, and, of course, the engine and transmission.

This means, like the Ranger, the Amarok will be launched in various markets with a range of engines including a 2.0-liter biturbo four-cylinder diesel pumping 154kW and 500Nm through all four wheels, via a ten-speed automatic transmission.

An underpowered 2.0-liter single-turbo version will also be available in some models, hooked up to a six-speed transmission, but we don’t expect to see that here. What we’ll definitely see, however, is a V6 version that will use the same muscular 184kW/600Nm turbo diesel as the top-spec Rangers.

While some overseas markets are also lining up for the Amarok petrol sporting the Ford 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder seen in the Mustang here, and in the US version of the Ranger, we wouldn’t expect to see it here any time. quick.

A 3.0-liter 184kW V6 will be available in the higher-spec Aventura and PanAmericana models.

We also don’t expect to see the Amarok pack the 292kW/583Nm 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 petrol engine that Ford will pair with the Ranger Raptor, as Ford will likely want to keep the segment to themselves.

Also like the Ranger, the new Amarok is larger than the vehicle it replaces: on the 5350, the new model is 96mm longer than its predecessor, while the 3270mm wheelbase also equates to an increase of 173mm. The new model measures 1910mm in width and up to 1888 in height, depending on the tire and wheel combination.

Volkswagen says off-road capability has also been improved, with the wading depth of the Amarok increased from 500mm to 800mm, while the approach and departure angles have also increased, now to 29 degrees and 21 degrees, respectively. The ramp over angle is also 21 degrees.

Like the Ranger, the Amarok will be available with a part-time 4WD system and a new full-time system on the V6.

Like the Ranger, the Amarok will be available with a part-time 4WD system and a new full-time system on the V6.

The Amarok will also come with two 4WD systems – a part-time on-demand system with a two-speed transfer box on the lower-spec model, while the higher-spec version will get a permanent AWD system.

On the inside, the Amarok gets a different interior to the Ranger, but shares a number of features. A number of different dashboard displays will be available, depending on the model, with lower-spec models getting an 8-inch digital instrument display, while higher-spec models will get a 12-inch display. Likewise, the infotainment screen measures 10 inches on the lower model, with the upspec variant getting the larger 12-inch version.

Globally, the Amarok will be offered in five variants: the basic entry-level version is called the ‘Amarok’, while the slightly higher-spec models will be called the ‘Life’ and ‘Style’. The top-spec versions will be called ‘PanAmericana’ for the off-road-oriented range-topper and ‘Aventura’ for the more road-oriented luxury range-topper. Volkswagen New Zealand has so far confirmed the PanAmericana and Aventura for our market, but hasn’t revealed how far the reach is.

“All New Amarok is ready to usher in a new era of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in New Zealand,” said General Manager of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles New Zealand, Kevin Richards.

“With Volkswagen’s cutting-edge design and refinement, this new ute brings a new level of safety and driver assistance along with some great features that will make it great to drive. We are excited to see the vehicle for the first time and can’t wait to have it on New Zealand roads to prove they are up there with the best of the bunch.”

Volkswagen New Zealand said the pricing of the new line-up will be announced later this year and New Zealand deliveries will begin early next year, with interested customers able to register their interest now.
