Queen's six-word claim after hearing Meghan Markle will miss Philip's funeral

The Queen allegedly said “thank goodness Meghan didn’t come” to the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, according to an unnamed source cited in a new book.

Tom Bower biographer’s latest book – Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors – being serialized on Time and Sunday Timeand includes controversial claims.

An excerpt published in Saturday’s newspaper indicated that the Queen was relieved that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, then seven months pregnant, would not attend her husband Philip’s funeral on April 17 last year.

“‘Thank God Meghan isn’t coming’, the king said in a clear voice to his trusted aides,” the book says.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the story.

However, a source close to the Queen questioned whether she would be thinking about anything other than Philip on the day of the funeral.

Bower also claims the Duke of Sussex and Meghan made “a request to appear with the Queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace” during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations last month.

The book alleged that the Prince of Wales opposed this arrangement.

Clarence House also declined to comment on the book.

“The festering is their (Harry and Meghan’s) anger that the palace has rejected all of their demands for an important role in the Jubilee,” Bower wrote.

“In Meghan’s view, the optics are unsatisfactory, in part because their value to Netflix is standing by the Queen.”

Prince Harry and Meghan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bower’s previous illegitimate biographies have featured Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Charles, Tony Blair and Richard Branson, among others.

What happens when the nobles go on vacation?

As summer hits its peak in the UK and Europe, millions go on vacation or take time off from work to catch up with friends and relatives.

And that includes royalty. July and August are usually quiet months in the royal calendar, as clan members take a break from the hectic schedule of public duties.

Suddenly, the hectic schedule of public performances, speeches, and royal tours comes to a halt — and the members become inactive.

But how easy is it for the royal family to really get away from it all – and what happens to a royal holiday?

The most famous holiday destination for royals is Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the Queen spends her summers and where many family get-togethers have taken place.

While at Balmoral, the king was seen enjoying country walks, horseback riding and picnicking with his family. “This is the most beautiful place in the world … and I think Grandma was the happiest there,” Princess Eugenie said in the 2016 ITV documentary.

But the nobles also wanted to go further. The Queen’s younger sister, Princess Margaret, is spending a long vacation on Mustique, an island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean.

Her relationship with the island dates back to 1960 when she saw her while sailing in the Caribbean on the royal yacht, the Britannia. The owner, Colin Tennant, gave him a 10-acre plot as a wedding gift, and he later used his island villa as a retreat from the media spotlight and to throw parties at celebrity companies.

Many nobles also like cold weather retreats. Prince Philip took his children Princess Anne and Prince Charles on a ski trip to Liechtenstein in 1965, and Diana, Princess of Wales regularly treated his sons William and Harry to some adventures on the slopes.

And sometimes, romance develops during the royal holidays. When Prince Harry introduced Meghan Markle as his fiancé in 2017, he told reporters about their romantic trip to Botswana, where they camped under the stars, away from prying eyes.

The visit was definitely an important one for the couple. Their time in the country is even represented on Meghan’s engagement ring, which features diamonds from the south African nation.

Harry’s romantic story is no different from his brother William, who proposed to Kate Middleton over the holidays in a log cabin in the shadow of Mount Kenya. The couple got engaged while living in a rural hideaway near a sprawling nature reserve where rhinos and giraffes roam freely.

With so many memories being made while traveling the world in private, it’s no wonder the royals cherish their holidays as much as the rest of us.

Last December, William and Kate released photos of their family trip to Jordan. We don’t yet know where the royals are going on holiday this year, but after a busy period over the Queen’s Jubilee weekend last month, no doubt they’ll enjoy setting up their out-of-office email.
