Depp in a legal agreement agreed to abide by the settlement by the end of August, according to court documents, as trial in the case will begin in July.

“The settlement agreement requires cessation of this matter upon satisfactory settlement of certain terms which will not be effected within 45 days of the settlement date,” according to court documents in the case. ‘A request for dismissal will be submitted no later than 1/5/2023.’

Details of the settlement were not disclosed in court documents, and the case will continue if Depp does not follow through with the terms of the agreement.

Brooks originally filed a lawsuit against the actor in 2018, claiming that Depp in April 2017 had punched him twice in the midsection, yelling at him and challenging him to beat him back by offering $100,000. Brooks claims that Depp smelled alcohol in exchange, and had consumed drugs on the set of the film. The accusation was denied by Depp.

Brooks said he was acquitted of the film when he disagreed not to sue Depp over the encounter.

Emma Danoff, who works as script supervisor for City of Lies, told the court in a statement that Brooks’ account of the exchange was inaccurate. Danoff said he saw Brooks use a racial epithet on a black homeless woman during filming, and Depp had reacted to it.

“He immediately got up from the chair with us on the edge of the plantation bench and went to Brooks to defend the woman,” Danoff said in a court statement. ‘Mr. Depp said to Mr. Brooks, “You can’t talk to him like that. You think he’s inferior to you? Who do you think you are? How dare you?”‘

Danoff said he had photographic evidence that Depp did not hit Brooks.

Much of the televised trial centered around Heard’s claims that Depp – whom he married in February 2015 and filed for divorce in May 2016 – abused him physically and sexually, as he said he had assaulted her more than a dozen times. Depp denied that he ever hit Heard, saying he had been rude to him.

Depp was awarded $15 million in damages, which the judge reduced to $10.4 million in accordance with state law limits on damages. Heard was awarded $2 million by jury for damages stemming from statements made by Depp’s attorneys that Heard had fabricated the story and destroyed the apartment he shared with Depp to make it look bad when authorities were called to the scene.

Following the trial, Depp released a statement saying he was ‘absolutely humbled’ by the ad the jury had ‘given’. [him his] come back to life’ with the verdict.

“From the very beginning, the purpose of bringing this case forward was to uncover the truth, regardless of the outcome,” he said. ‘Speaking the truth is something I owe to my children and to everyone who has remained steadfast in supporting me. I feel at peace knowing that I have finally achieved it.’
