Hotshot attorney Johnny Depp responds after Amber Heard 'lit a Twitter bonfire'

Johnny Depp’s hotshot attorney Camille Vasquez has conducted his first sitting interview after Amber Heard formally filed an appeal notice of the $10 million verdict in the former couple’s defamation case.

A Heard spokesperson announced the appeal move with a statement that appeared to preempt the social media backlash in early July.

“We believe the court made a mistake that prevented a fair and just verdict in accordance with the First Amendment,” the spokesperson said.

“Therefore, we appealed the decision.

“While we recognize today’s filing will light a Twitter bonfire, there are steps we need to take to ensure fairness and justice.”

Speaking to CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King on Friday, Vasquez said Heard’s appeal was “expected”.

“He indicated from the day he lost the trial that he would appeal.”

“Mr Depp has finally filed his own appeal so the court can have a complete record.

“He insisted on continuing to file this case. We have to protect the interests of our clients.”

Vasquez’s reference to Depp’s “own appeal” refers to the fact that he has also appealed against the jury’s ruling that he had defamed Heard through comments made by his attorney Adam Waldman in 2020.

After Depp’s courtroom win, the actor told fans: “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun”.

The king asked Vasquez: “How do you heal and proceed when both sides are still arguing in court?”

“It’s pretty standard legal procedure,” Vasquez said.

“We just hope the court will uphold the verdict, which we think is the right one, and allow both sides to move on.”

“So is it safe to say that if he doesn’t appeal, you all won’t appeal either and you’ll move on?” The king asked.

“Yes,” replied Vasquez. “That’s a very fair statement.”

Prior to the formal notification of the appeal, Heard’s attorneys had unsuccessfully asked Judge Penney Azcarate to override the verdict and “investigate potential inappropriate jury service”.

Among the arguments, Heard’s attorney suggested one jury on the panel might have been illegally selected.

According to court documents, a summons was addressed to a 77-year-old man.

But the man who answered instead was his 52-year-old son, who has the same name and lives at the same address.

However, in a written order, Judge Penney Azcarate dismissed all of Heard’s claims and said the jury matter was specifically irrelevant and that Heard could not demonstrate that he was prejudiced.

“The jury was examined, sat down for the entire jury, deliberated, and reached a verdict. The only evidence before this Court is that this jury and all jurors followed their oath, Court instructions, and orders.

“This trial is bound by the decision of a competent jury,” wrote Azcarate.
