Doctor’s disgusting experiment proves why you NEVER use a bathroom hand dryer and shake it dry: ‘This is a warning to everyone’

  • Leading epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding has urged people not to use hand dryers
  • Shared a TikTok video showing the effect of shaking hands compared to a dryer
  • The clip shows that significantly more germs show up in a desiccated petri dish

A doctor has revealed the disgusting reason why you shouldn’t use a hand dryer and always opt for paper towels or a handshake instead.

Epidemiologist Dr Eric Feigl-Ding, who is on the committee of COVID-19 mortality experts for the World Health Organization, shared a TikTok video originally posted by US company Phone Soap showing the effect of drying hands compared to using a hand dryer.

In the clip, a man tests various petri dishes to see how many germs grow after being incubated for three days.

Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding, who is on the committee of COVID-19 mortality experts for the World Health Organization, shared a TikTok video originally posted by US company Phone Soap showing the effects of drying hands over using a hand dryer. In the clip, a man tests various Petri dishes to see how many germs grow after being incubated for three days.

Shaking his hand to the left caused nothing to grow in the petri dish, while putting the petri dish under the hand dryer saw a large number of bacteria appear in just three days.

The same level of germs emerged from gas station dryers, while Dyson’s airblades in theaters were just as bad, but still saw far more growth than dry shaken petri dishes.

Sharing the video, Dr Feigl-Ding wrote: ‘Note Bene—DO NOT USE THE BATHROOM HAND DRYER. Research shows these dryers suck up and blow out fecal aerosols. Shake your hands dry instead’.

It comes after a Californian woman warned people to be careful with closed hand dryers in public restrooms by sharing a sickening photo of what she said were potentially harmful bacteria and fungi that can be blown onto your skin every time you use them.

Nicole Ward took to Facebook to share the results of a disturbing experiment.

The photo he posted shows a Petri dish full of mold and bacteria after being put in a hand dryer for just three minutes.

The image shows a Petri dish with some stuff growing quite large in it after only 48 hours.

He explained that the dish had ‘several types of fungal and bacterial pathogens’ that ended up on the hands of people using closed hand dryers.

What are pathogenic bacteria and fungi?

Pathogenic bacteria and fungi are those that can cause disease.

Many bacteria – such as those found naturally in the body, including acidophilus – are harmless, but nearly 100 types can cause disease in humans.

And while there are about 300 different types of fungi that are pathogenic to humans, some — like many fungi — are harmless.

Nichole Ward has explained in her post that while fungi and bacteria grow in Petri dishes, they are only ‘probably’ pathogens, and may actually be harmless.

Pathogenic fungi and bacteria are those that cause disease.

‘I put the exposed platen in the closed hand dryer in the public bathroom for a total of 3 minutes. Yes 3 only.

‘NEVER dry your hands with those things again,’ he added.

Bacteria spread more easily when your hands are wet, so if you’re a shaker and don’t dry your hands properly, you may not need to bother washing your hands.

Instead, it’s best to shake it dry or your paper towels.

Researchers at the University of Leeds in the UK have previously called for air hand dryers to be banned from hospital toilets because they blow bacteria around the room.

They found high levels of harmful bacteria that cause blood poisoning, pneumonia and gastroenteritis when dryers are used.

Writing in the Journal of Hospital Infection, they called for dryers — which can leave up to five times more bacteria on floors than paper towels — to be taken out of hospitals.

Leeds scientists also discovered in 2020 that paper towels to dry your hands are ‘substantially’ more effective at removing viruses like COVID-19 than hand dryers.

In the study, they found ten of the 11 surfaces touched by someone using a hand dryer had significantly more contamination than people using paper towels.

Scientists say hand drying is important to minimize the spread of harmful microbes.
