Customer engages in a war of words with cafe owner after he complains about 'small' coffee for $12

A customer got into a war of words with the cafe owner after he complained about paying $12 for two “small” cups of coffee.

Victoria Devine, a financial advisor from Melbourne, visited her “favorite” coffee shop Pantry Glen Iris on Wednesday after the revamped venue reopened under new owners.

Much to his surprise, he claims he saw the small cup of coffee he usually orders now for $6 instead of $4.

However, Julien Moussi, cafe owner and director of Only Hospitality Group, says there is more to the story.

“Our coffee is $5.20. Victoria had ordered her coffee with plant-based milk but failed to be transparent about it,” she said 7Live.

Earlier on Wednesday, the millennial money expert shared a picture of the coffee on his Instagram Story, along with the caption: “My favorite cafe reopened with new owners so now two small coffees cost $12.”

Hours later, Victoria – who has more than 40,000 followers on Instagram – received an unexpected message in her inbox from Julien, who responded to her post.

“Predictable,” wrote Julien.

‘Get a real job’

“Our prices are a reflection of our talent, not your budget. Best you find yourself another local. There’s a 7-Eleven nearby that has $1 coffee?

“Otherwise, get a real job that pays properly so you can buy the good things in life.”

Stunned by the response, Victoria shared a screenshot of the message, adding sarcastically, “Good, very good”.

He claimed not to know how the owner found out about his post on Instagram.

“Keep in mind that when I post this, I’m not tagging the cafe or where I am,” Victoria said.

“Only people who know which cafe is my favorite know where I am talking about custom content.

“I also think it’s totally acceptable not to like that your coffee goes from $4 for 8oz (225g) to $6 for 6oz (170g).”

After she called him out on social media, the cafe was bombarded with negative comments on social media.

‘Stand by my word’

Despite his reaction, Julien said, “I really stick to my word.”

However, he clarified comments about “getting a real job” “taken completely out of context”.

“I suggested he stop tasking himself with setting up our page and find something better to do. I understand he is a successful financial advisor,” said Julien.

He added: “We are very happy with what happened. The locals are amazing and the support is amazing.”

7Life has contacted Victoria Devine for comment.

Julien said the cafe has received a lot of support since it opened this week.

“To all of our crew, I love you. The definition of a great person and I have never felt so supported,” he said

“To all the Glen Iris Pantry customers who have come in droves over the past two days, we really appreciate you.”

Restaurants, cafes and supermarkets across Australia have raised prices amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Lawyer Traci Chen orders an $8.90 soy latte at the hotel bar inside Crown Tower in Barangaroo Credit: migration attorney/TikTok

Earlier this year, a migration attorney disclosed the staggering amount he was charged when he ordered a cup of coffee in Sydney.

Traci Chen, from Melbourne, ordered an $8.90 soy latte at a hotel bar inside Crown Tower in Barangaroo when she visited Sydney.

He was charged an additional $1 for soy milk, $1 for upgrading to a large cup and 80 cents for a “Sunday service fee”.

“Oh my God, I was just charged $8.90 for a cup of coffee,” he said in his viral TikTok video.

Talk to 7Life at the time, Traci explained how she “didn’t mind too much” about the price – but she knew the coffee was “more expensive than usual”.

He thought his coffee was expensive until he spoke to a friend who revealed he had just paid $10 for a “one size” cup of brew in Brisbane.
