During the incident, the thieves had used the Everyday Gift dollars that had been “saved” by the account holder to buy groceries without their knowledge.

A Woolworths spokesman said the supermarket was investigating the breach.

“We have assisted a number of members who appear to be victims of unauthorized access to their Everyday Rewards accounts,” the spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“In the case reported to us, the account was accessed using a valid login or account details.

“We found no evidence to suggest that our IT systems had been breached or compromised in any way.

“This indicates the fraudster may have obtained this member’s login credentials and account details from online scams or other sources.”

A supermarket spokesperson said now is the time for Everyday Rewards members to take extra steps (see list below) to keep their accounts safe.

“This is a timely reminder of the importance of having strong unique passwords, updating them regularly and remaining vigilant against fraud,” the representative said.

“If any member believes there is fraudulent activity on their account, we encourage them to contact us, so we can immediately secure their account and refund any points.”

Facebook users said they were blinded by the hacking incident.

“So today I noticed that somehow someone in another state used my Woolworths Rewards dollars ($60) on a Saturday! I’m so pissed off!” said one.

“What have other people done when this happened to them. Obviously I’ll never see the money again but I don’t know how to stop it. The password has been changed by me. ”

Another said: “Has this happened to anyone before? Someone used my Woolworths Rewards card $100 from Banked Rewards.”

A third said: “It happens to me twice in a week. I called them. Got my points back and have now switched to ‘Bank for Christmas’ as an extra layer of security.”

Another wrote: “So glad I saw this, just checked my own account and saw someone used my $20 to buy a leg of lamb last month. I didn’t even know this was something. No wonder I don’t have a $10 discount to use. ”

Any Woolworths Everyday Rewards member who believes their account has been fraudulently accessed is encouraged to contact Woolworths directly.

7NEWS.com.au understands that any points redeemed fraudulently will be returned to the member in full.

Check your account

Woolworths has shared these important tips to keep your Everyday Rewards account safe:

  1. Change your Everyday Rewards password if you have used it for another account, make sure the password is unique for all online accounts.
  2. Update your password to a stronger passphrase, including numbers and special characters like ILOVE2ReadB00ks! and 2beornot2B?
  3. Take a closer look at who’s calling you and suspect calls, texts, or emails that don’t appear to be genuine. Everyday Rewards will never ask for your login details by phone or SMS.
