Carrigan faces lengthy ban for 'horrendous' tackle on Hastings as Tigers dent Broncos top four hopes

Broncos star Patrick Carrigan faces the prospect of missing out on the remainder of the regular season through suspension after being referred straight to an NRL court for his “horrendous” hip-drop overcoming Jackson Hastings in Saturday night’s angry defeat to the Wests Tigers.

He will appear in court on Tuesday night to face charges of dangerous behavior for a tackle in the 73rd minute

Lock Tigers hobbled and was on crutches on the sidelines after the game with fears he had a syndesmosis injury and will not play again this year.

Interim coach Brett Kimmorley was outraged by the incident.

“I thought it was a normal tackle,” said Kimmorley. “It’s something that creeps into the game a bit and needs attention because it’s a horrendous tackle and the result can be really bad.”

Broncos coach Kevin Walters denied Carrigan’s tackle was intentional and was one of those things that happened “in the heat of the battle”.

Rabbitohs prop Tom Burgess is facing a 1-2 match ban for his tough tackle in extra time against Cronulla that saw him sent off while Raiders prop Joseph Tapine could receive a $1000 fine for conflicting behavior in his only other charge from Saturday’s game competition.

On the game itself, Kimmorley said it was “no coincidence” that his Wests Tigers put a big dent in Brisbane’s top four hopes with a 32-18 temper at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

The Broncos had ceded fourth place to the Storm, who beat the Warriors 24 hours earlier, when they were level against the team that ran last.

And the good news for the Tigers is that they have lifted themselves from last place with their big win, putting the Gold Coast to wooden spoon favoritism after they went to Canberra earlier in the day.

Perhaps it was karma for the Wests after they denied a legitimate win the previous week when a bunker error crushed their hopes of securing two valuable competition points against the Cowboys in Townsville.

“With the hard work the players have put in over the past few weeks, this is coming,” said interim coach Brett Kimmorley.

“I’d like to think it’s no coincidence what we achieved tonight. The journey the team went through after Sunday night when things went against us and has every reason to fall into the pile now, I’m proud of these boys as coach.”

Walters admits his team is second best.

“In critical moments the Tigers are just better than us,” he said. “You don’t have to go too far (your game) at this level to lose.

“I think the Tigers’ football has been really good lately, and I don’t think they should be sitting where they are at the table.”

Tigers winger Brent Naden opened the scoring in the 12th minute to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. Tesi Niu equalized midway through the first half when he slotted the ball into the back line on the right bank.

Five-eight Ezra Mam made it 12-6 when he twisted his way across the line and Naden should have hit back seven minutes before the break but ran out and latched on to a left corner pass just yards away.

Wests finally equalized just before half-time when Kelma Tuilagi broke free and found the ball inside for Jock Madden to juggle after being called into the side to replace Luke Brooks, who is out for the rest of the year with a calf injury.

They were 18-12 six minutes after the restart when Adam Doueihi hit back a bomb and Starford center To’a fell wide.

The Tigers made it 24-12 when Zane Musgrove’s bench brace fell for just the third try of his career.

Brisbane fought back into the contest midway through the second period as Jordan Riki scrambled over the line to halve the deficit.

Just as the Broncos were about to equalize heading down the stretch, the Tigers extended their lead to eight when Carrigan was penalized for a hip drop tackle on Hastings.

The key limped and was on crutches on the sidelines before the full-time siren sounded.

Doueihi slipped through several thin defenses to seal just their fourth win in 19 starts this season and their first since interim coach Brett Kimmorley took over from Michael Maguire last month.
