'Comically Bad' Meal Leaves Business Class Passengers Questioning the Rising Edge of Travel

A business class passenger on an Avianca flight experienced a sour taste in his mouth. He recently took to the Internet to share his experiences of unclean toilets, packaged desserts, and breakfasts “served in economy class containers.”

The priesthood may not say “no one has the wrath of a business class passenger scorned” but he really had to. Why? A spiky late passenger recently took to the Internet with another hit from his London-Bogota flight Avianca 787, where the experience failed to live up to its bill as a premium service.

A “comically bad” experience stabbed by avid traveler Matthew Klint, who writes for aviation websites Jump & Let’s Fly. Klint recently flew Avianca, a Colombian airline that has been the flag carrier of Colombia since December 5, 1919, when it was originally registered under the name SCADTA.

Even though Avianca isn’t well-known as one of the world’s leading luxury airlines (for airlines that have the best business class deals in the world today, visit here), when booking international business class tickets, you still expect the basics. – certain industry standards – must be enforced.

Unfortunately for Klint, this, especially in terms of food, is not proven. He even called it “pathetic.” Speaking of his in-flight meals, Klint complained that they fed him lukewarm crew meals “with packaged sandwiches and packaged desserts.”

“Hot on the sides, cold in the middle.”

He added: “Breakfast is served before landing – again, in an economy class container. At least this time the omelet was warm. Unfortunately, the coffee is just brown water without much flavor and the bread is cold and hard.” He later pointed out it was a relief to have his connections in Houston and “really receive properly plated food.”

In addition, Klint was unimpressed with the state of the bathroom (which he said was not the crew’s fault, but an accusation against them), which did not appear to have been cleaned during the flight.

Klint later said the reason the airline provided the changed service (Avianca left a note on her seat that said, basically, sorry for the changed service, we had 12 months off and are still working on our issues) was not good enough, writing: “blame your caterer bad on a long hiatus in the London service really makes no sense.”

“Avianca has weeks to prepare for her return and can easily work with her caterer to provide decent business class meals, including salads and entrees. Instead, we received lukewarm crew food.”

This isn’t the first time there has been a mismatch between the airline’s adaptation to the pandemic (and other confounding factors) and passenger expectations – especially when it comes to business class. One Singapore Airlines passenger went viral on Facebook after champagne was removed from the Singapore Airlines menu in 2020, for example. And who can forget the Virgin Australia Noodlegate incident and the Qantas paper plate gate scandal…

Just another day in this post-pandemic world. And other things to think about (besides baggage handlers destroying your baggage, airlines losing your baggage, and massive flight delays) before your next flight.

It’s also worth noting that in a previous review of Avianca’s business class (as they used plates), the food received mixed reviews. In 2018 Forbes the author called the presentation of the food less appealing (“rather than throwing it away, the flight attendant put the starter and plate of cheese on the same tray, then came later with the main course”) while The blonde overseas once wrote “Avianca’s food and beverage menu for its business class passengers is outstanding.”

Maybe next time you get the chance, you should book a ticket and try it out for yourself.
