What you’ve been waiting for Toyota Corolla Cross 2023 The small SUV has been given the go-ahead for sale in Australia, ahead of the arrival of the first showrooms before the end of this year.

A recent Australian government certification document for the Corolla Cross lists three, previously confirmed powertrains for Toyota’s latest SUV: a 2.0-liter petrol engine with front-wheel drive, and a 2.0-liter hybrid system with front or all-wheel drive.

The document hints at the availability of three model classes: an entry-level model with 17-inch wheels, a mid-spec variant with additional features, and a flagship class with 18-inch wheels and all available luxury features.

Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but if overseas pricing is a guide, expect the entry-level model to come in at around $35,000 a drive-away in petrol, up close to $45,000 or a $50,000 drive-away for a top-of-the-range hybrid. all-wheel-drive models.

The Corolla Cross fits into Toyota’s SUV lineup between the Yaris Cross (about $30,000 to $42,000 drive) and the RAV4 (about $38,000 to $58,000 drive), and alongside the more radical C-HR (about $31,000 to $41,500 drive-away).

Government documents show the base petrol engine will be a 2.0-liter non-turbo four-cylinder along with the Corolla hatch and RAV4, developing 126kW (vs. 125kW Corolla), with a continuously variable-automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel steering.

The hybrid version uses a 2.0-liter 112kW petrol engine with an electric motor with an unspecified output. Overseas, the system develops 146kW which is incorporated in the front-wheel drive model.

The all-wheel drive option – which will be offered only in the top two model classes in Australia – adds another electric motor (31kW) to the rear axle, for a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.1 seconds.

Available in Japan is a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine in the form of 103kW/170Nm petrol only, or as part of a hybrid system – along with the Corolla hatch and sedan – developing 90kW. It has not been certified for sale in Australia.

The government document provides few details on standard features, but 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard on the lower class model, and 18-inch alloy wheels on the most expensive variant.

All models will feature a center airbag between the front seats – designed to prevent passengers’ heads from colliding in a side collision – government documents confirm.
