2023 five-door Suzuki Jimny confirmed in new spy photos

The rumors are true: a five-door Suzuki Jimny is in development, new spy photos taken in Europe have been confirmed – and it could be a hybrid.

While Suzuki engineers have been seen testing prototypes of the Jimny with a longer wheelbase repeatedly over the past 12 months, all of them use three doors – making this test car flinch by drive First night spy photo partner with five.

Compared to the standard three-door Jimny, the five-door model has a longer wheelbase – reportedly 300mm longer, for a total of 2550mm – allowing for the inclusion of two full-size rear openings.

While difficult to see at first, the front door windows of the five-door prototype don’t appear to be as long as those on the current three-door – suggesting that the five-door has a smaller front door, in turn creating space for a larger rear. doors that increase entry and exit.

Whether this will jeopardize the front passenger compartment remains to be seen. Not surprisingly, the fuel filler cap has been moved from behind the front right door, to the rear right door.

The five-door test car appears to be driving on the same floor as the three-door test car with a long wheelbase – suggesting that it’s a mule for a more practical body style, disguising its intentions with the standard Jimny’s longer front doors. , and longer rear side window openings.

According to the spy photographer, the five-door Jimny test vehicle “[drove] go without the engine sound” – pointing to the hybrid powertrain gear.

Overseas rumors suggest the five-door Jimny may feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system, mounted on the current Jimny 75kW/130Nm 1.5 liter four-cylinder non-turbo engine, or a turbocharged engine.

However, most mild hybrid systems – including those offered by Suzuki – cannot drive the wheels on electricity alone, instead requiring the petrol engine to be turned on and, at a minimum, sit at idle speed.

On the other hand, if the photographer’s reports of no engine noise are accurate, the five-door Jimny could be equipped with the ‘closed-loop’ powertrain of the European Suzuki Vitara Full Hybrid, based around the Jimny’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder.

Running at 140 volts – more than the mild hybrid (48V), but less than Toyota’s entry-level hybrid (200V) – the system combines an 85kW version of the 1.5 liter engine with a 25kW electric motor, for a system capable of fully electric driving at speeds low.

However, the automatic manual transmission often stutters and wobbles at low speeds, as the car uses a clutch – something that may not be suitable for precise off-road driving, according to Jimny’s intentions.

Adding weight to this theory is the prototype five-door tachometer, which reads the same 6200rpm redline marker as the current three-door – indicating the same 1.5-liter engine is under the hood.

Reports suggest the five-door Suzuki Jimny could debut as soon as this year – or as far back as 2024, coinciding with a rumored midlife facelift to four-wheel drive.

A glimpse inside the front cabin of the five-door Jimny reveals no changes compared to the car on sale today – suggesting it may come as a regular addition to the line-up, rather than coincide with any updates for a wider range.

Suzuki Australia has previously expressed interest in the more practical Jimny – not surprising to fans of the model, given the popularity of the three-door locally, and long waiting times.
