Flight AB 001 makes history at Sunshine Coast Airport

Image
Bonza’s first plane has landed at Sunshine Coast Airport, landing a massive coup for our region. In one of the largest launch announcements in Australian aviation history, Sunshine Coast Airport was in February named the first Bonza base and headquarters location for the nation’s only independent airline. The arrival of the first plane, which left Seattle on July 29, flew to Honolulu on July 30 and then left Fiji Monday morning, marking an important milestone for the company and supporting the ongoing momentum with the regulatory process. It is the first Boeing 737 MAX based in Australia and will be part of a fleet of new and fuel-efficient aircraft. They will serve Australian travelers flying to an initial 17 destinations across 27 routes. Destinations that will soon be available to Coast residents are: (Queensland) Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Whitsundays Coast, Rockhampton; (NSW) Port Coffs, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Albury, Tamworth; (Victoria) Melbourne, Avalon and Mi...

Amber Heard sold the house she bought in 2019 for $1.05 million after being ordered to pay Johnny Depp $8.3 million

Image
Unsealed court documents show Amber Heard abandoned divorce payments from Johnny Depp that could run into the tens of millions of dollars, as the struggling actress sold her beloved California home. Documents seen by the Daily Beast show that the Aquaman star, 36, ignored guidance from his legal team not to pursue Depp for the maximum cash he was entitled to after they filed for divorce in 2016. He could have asked for half of the $33 million Depp he made to shoot the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, because it was made while they were married. But Heard chose not to, and wrote to them an email saying he was ‘very true to his word, that it’s now about money.’ A judge refused to allow the evidence to be accepted during Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Heard. He was ordered to pay Depp a total of $8.3 million after being found guilty of defamation, but said he did not have enough money to do so. Amber Heard appears to have sold her Southern California ...

Why are flights to Europe so expensive? Blame China

Image
China Eastern flight attendant in Brisbane. Before the pandemic there were nine mainland Chinese airlines flying Australian routes. Photo: Glenn Hunt Want to fly to Paris in mid-September for a three-week getaway to experience the wonders of late summer in Europe? From either Melbourne or Sydney, you can pick up an economy class airfare on a budget airline for around $2200 but fly on a major league airline and you can expect to pay between $3500-$5000. The plane ticket has gone through the roof. In July 2022 you pay for a long-distance economy class seat which almost gets you into premium economy before the pandemic. Premium economy seats? Expect to pay close to what the business costs in 2019. What happened? Rising fuel prices are part of the reason we pay more to fly to Europe, but another big factor is the lack of low price competition. As of May 2022, a total of 51 international airlines operate scheduled passenger services to Australia. That’s 10 less than ...

The last panda in Europe is a weak giant who can't even eat bamboo

Artist’s interpretation of a new species of European panda. (Image credit: © Velizar Simeonovski, Chicago) (opens in a new tab) A pair of fossilized teeth in the museum’s collection was recently revealed when pandas last roamed Europe. When the researchers examined the teeth, which had been in storage for about 40 years, they found that the fossils belonged to an ancient European panda species that had never been seen before. The newly discovered species, which is a close relative of the modern giant panda, roamed the continent about 6 million years ago and was likely the last panda in Europe. The teeth – the upper canines and upper molars – were originally excavated in the late 1970s from a site in northwestern Bulgaria, but were eventually housed in the Bulgarian National Museum of Natural History in Sofia. The teeth were never properly cataloged, and as a result they were left untouched for decades. But when museum staff recently discovered an unusual t...

Rooftop solar panels cost Ricky Barone thousands, but never worked. Now he wants them released

Image
Ricky Barone installed a solar system on his roof in 2014 to make the most of North Queensland’s sunshine and save money on his electricity bill. Key points: Ricky Barone has been told the installation is a fire hazard but the retailer will not uninstall it A number of regulatory agencies receive complaints about diesel retailers, manufacturers and installers Some of the main issues raised were related to price, quality and high-pressure sales Since its installation, however, it has cost thousands of dollars and years without sleep. It was only this year that a so-called solar doctor inspected his roof panels did Mackay’s man realize the potential danger he was in. “He [the solar inspector] basically saying it was badly installed and there was a high chance it could catch fire,” Barone said. “I’m very disturbed and I haven’t slept well thinking about it.” Mr Barone said it was a two year wait to get the solar system installed by a local co...

Scientists study the inner ear to determine the origin of mammals

Image
Mammals can generate their own body heat and control their body temperature. This process is known as endothermic or warm-blooded. Scientists believe that may be the reason why mammals tend to dominate almost everything ecosystem . Warm-blooded mammals are more active than cold-blooded animals. They can live in different environments, from frozen poles to boiling deserts. And they breed faster. Soft tissue that will provide information about being warm or cold blooded is rare preserved in fossil . So paleontologists, or experts in the study of fossils, don’t know exactly when mammals evolved and turned into warm-blooded creatures. A group of scientists tried to answer that question in a study recently published in Natural . Ricardo Araújo is a paleontologist at the University of Lisbon. Araújo and a group of researchers proposed that the shape and size of inner ear structures called canals could be used to study body temperature. The movement of fluid through the ear canal ...

'A voice for generations': The impact of Archie Roach, told by those who know and love him

Image
From the top of Arnhem Land, where musicians draw inspiration from his timeless words, to the streets of Melbourne’s Fitzroy, where fans leave floral tributes on the steps of Charcoal Lane, it seems like nowhere in the country hasn’t been touched by Archie Roach. His sons, Amos and Eban, said Archie died surrounded by his family and loved ones at Warrnambool Base Hospital in Victoria. Archie’s family has given permission to use his name, image and music. But the love Archie feels goes far beyond that hospital ward, far beyond state lines and color lines to every corner of the land we call Australia. Archie left a legacy of tireless work towards reconciliation and a new generation inspired to carry his message of healing into the future. As Australia comes to terms with the loss of one of its greatest storytellers, those touched by Archie open up about what it means to them. Tributes were paid outside Melbourne’s Charcoal Lane Aboriginal social enterprise, which ...
